In your opinion, does it increase power and mileage as advertised? Have you ever inspected the backside of the air box for dirt? I'm desperate for anything that'll make up for my larger tires. Given the non aftermarket for our rides, I'm willing to give every bolt-on, drop in item available an extremely hard look.

There are those, including myself, that do not agree with the anti-K&N BS that has been posted here. I have used K&N units on many different dirt bikes and off-road vehicles, and have never seen an incident where intake dirt caused any problems with cylinder wear. If the K&N unit is oiled properly, it will filter as well as anything out there. My current truck has had the K&N filter for 145K of the 165K on it. Its been used in a variety of very dusty environments and the last compression check I did (10K ago), was excellent.

I also follow a board for my 86 F-250 diesel truck. With the NA trucks, the easiest way to get added HP on these non-turbo trucks is to increase the air intake. There were some pretty cool intake mods, and many, many discussions on air filters and filtration. There were members who did regular oil analysis for their rigs. I saw pretty solid evidence that for the pre-powerstroke Ford diesels, the addition of the K&N filter dramatically increased the particulate count in the oil analysis, particularly silicates. This was on rigs that were religiously maintained (to the point of regular oil analysis). I would hate to think what Joe Blow that doesn't know how to clean and oil that filter is doing to his motor. It was enough to make me stop using the K&N.

I would be curious whether the K&N application for the Monty is any better. What kind of compression numbers are you getting? Wouldn't increased particulate levels in the oil also affect the main bearings? That kind of wear wouldn't show up in compression numbers, but would in oil analysis.

Anyway, something to think about.

Crag? Where is your authority for this? Where's the actual data other than YOU didn't notice any difference? Did you ever have your oil analyzed? did you ever conduct a scientific test? i.e. passed particulate comparison between filters?

I'd be very interested in seeing the data that supports your opinion that all negative comments posted here regarding the actual vs. advertised performance of K&N filters are "BS".....

Great links! I love that kind of detailed info. I didn't find much on Mitsu's or Montys though. Reading a handfull of threads, it seems that the filtering performance of the K&N varies between vehicle applications as well as ambient conditions. You are running a K&N filter in your 95 SR, do you have your oil analyzed? Have you done any tests between filters?

I ordered a test kit from Blackstone Labs and am awaiting to test it. I am running a flush product that is gentle and removes all the contaminents its called Auto RX do a search on the board for "ARX" it is a wonderful thing..

Oh ya back to topic I am going to be analyzing the Mobil 1 10-30 soon. I will report back.

I have used a regualar paper filter before and alot of the engine noise was reduced.

Here is a UOA on a Montero http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001509#000000

Seer, what's your authority on this? How many engines have you PERSONALLY wasted due to the intake air filtration of a K&N filter? How many engines have you run a K&N filter on long term? Evidently, you do not agree with my opinion on K&N filters. Oh well, don't read my post then. My opinion is based on a lot of personal experience with K&N filters, and so I thought I'd pass that on to those asking about them.

There is a plethora of test result information on oiled gauze filter elements on the internet. From what I have seen, just as many test results are positive as are negative. Much of the information is contradictory.

When my current Mitsu short-block dies, it will die from cold, no-oil pressure start ups, not contaminated intake air or broken down, particulate laden oil (you do change your oil?). Want your engine to live a long time, install a pre-luber or oil accumulator to eliminate no-pressure running.

Don't want to use a K&N? Fine. I didn't buy mine for performance increase (very very slight if anything). I bought it for its reusability and because I agree with the idea of using an oiled element.
