What makes you think the compressor needs replaced?

If a leak develops anywhere in the system, all the freon escapes, and the compressor oil goes with it. So there's a low-pressure cutoff switch in the system to prevent you from running the compressor without oil until it siezes and you *DO* need a new compressor.
