I think the reason behind the difference is in the gearing. Even though the auto is heavier, it has taller gearing, and thus fewer revs at speed. This explains why the 5-speeds (like mine, I might add! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />) feel quicker and the autos get a tad bit better mileage.
