Just got back in from doing a little TLC to my truck, which included an oil change. Something that kinda gave me the heebies was when I pulled the oil filter, there wasn't the usual mess of oil I usually have to scramble to catch. Actually, not a drop of oil at all! I'm thinking this can't be good. Last time I changed the oil was about 4 months/200 miles ago, when I did the timing chain. I don't drive it much, just on small errands on the weekends. There weren't any idiot lights on, and the thing was running great. The oil that came out today looked like it had been circulating fine, it was nice and dark. I'm stumped...should I be worried? Am I screwed?
Oh yeah, 22RE, Purolator Pure 1 filter, if that helps...

Was the filter at least heavy, as if the media was full of oil? Maybe you found what we have all been looking for these last few months...a filter with a WORKING anti-drainback valve. Hell...regardless of advertising only ones Ive seen holding oil lately are the basic orange frams.
If you engine was warm when doing the oil change, you should have had at least a little something something dribbling down the block...

I pulled my purolator off my 86 and it didn't have a drop in it. I had driven it for quite a few miles and decided to go with a toyota filter due to it having a drainback valve.
I guess the purolator didn't have a drainback in it because when I put the toyota filter on and started it and drove it and then pulled it off to see, oil leaked out of it.

Last oil change, my mom took the 4Runner into the GM Dealer since the Toy facility is getting ready to move and they aren't doing services right now, and they stuck an AC Delco filter on there. I went and bought a Gin-u-wine Toy filter and put it on, but I gotta say, when I took off the Delco one (engine warm, I burned myself on the d*mn thing), not a drop came out, tho it was full of oil. Took it apart and it actually seemed pretty high quality to my surprise.

What is a Geniun Toyota oil filter anyways? They are actually just a brand name filter made for Toyota by one of the major filter companies and painted in pretty black color with Toyota part number stamped all over them. The only question is which brand. I'm not sure, but I'm sure somebody knows. Even so, I just as much as a sucker as anyone else. I too drive down to the stealer and plop down the cash for an overpriced "Toyota" filter.

Buy them by the dozen online and it's only a few bucks per filter. A friend and I went in on a 12 pack for our trail rigs. Nice to have a few on the shelf at all times IMO.

I like the idea of more filter area. as for the drain back, every one I've taken off has been heavy and that includes the one that sat overnight. for some reason I've been disecting the filters after changes, but haven't found anything but brown filter media. that's a good thing, but for some reason I feel compelled to cut every single one open. [greenie mode]at least I can drain the oil out this way[/greenie mode] ..............Karl

Never use Fram filters!! I did a investigation on some filters..I cut some apart to see what the guts look like and the Frams are some of the lowest quality filters out there. They do not contain anti-drainback valves and they have half the filter material of a NAPA (Wix) filter. I haven't cut a Toy filter apart due to the fact that I could not find a Toy filter the same size as a PH8A or 1515 Napa filter.

I am using the 3614 tough guard Fram with the anti drain back valve in it. Are you saying all frams are crap? Have you taken apart this model as well? Seems kind of a biased opinion to me. I don't buy thier low end filters at all.

Believe it or not, I have had the same problem with the Toyota oil filters (which are made by Denso). Last time I changed the oil in my pickup ('93 22R-E) nary a drop of oil was in the filter - but, the engine had not been run for about 24 hours either. I've noticed lately I can really hear those valves dancing on startup until the oil (Valvoline 10W30) can get to them. I'm stumped as well.
