93 Trooper timing chain #467339 06/22/04 02:38 AM

My mechanic is telling me I should be thinking about a new timing chain for my 3.2 dohc. The engine has 98,000 mi on it and is running well. Is this good advice or is he hunting for business, about $800.00 worth. Just checking here before I go ahead with it. Thnks for any help.

I could be off here, but Troopers have timing belts, not chains. My 93 Trooper has a timing belt and was changed around 60k. I am preparing to have it done again now that I am almost at 120k, like the manual says. (i have the 3.2 dohc)

If you were quoted $800 just to do the belt, that sounds really high. I was quoted just under $900 for a complete 120k service (including belt, tensioner, water pump and a bunch of other junk).

If anyone else has better info, please chime in... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I had the timing belt on my Rodeo done for around $300. The actual belt's going to set you back something like $20. The rest is labor.

$800 will buy you a used 3.2 to drop in there yourself.

As for the need: yeah, you need a new timing belt if you've never had it done and you're pushing 100k. But I'd definitely get a second opinion.

For what it's worth (FWIW), you really should replace that water pump while you're in there, as it's got to come off anyhow. But keep looking...

I had the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and all the other drive belts replaced last year for ~$650.

It's not that hard to do yourself if you are mech. inclined. You just have to take off the fan, ignition coil pack and a few other small things and then the cover comes off in 3 pcs. Just line up the marks on the pullys to the marks on the engine and throw it all back together. Along with the water pump as Sweater said, you might want to do the tensioner while you are in there too. It would suck to do all that work and a few month later start hearing the tensioner ticking and have to do it all over again.

If your mechanic tells you it has a chain I'd look for another mechanic <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
