As a matter of fact, I do believe the swampers are a better mud and plan on purchasing a set sometime for whatever trail rig I end up with. I like the WC's but they aren't swampers.

Okay. Glad that you got my point. I was halfway giving you a hard time, and halfway pointing out that you haven't got a baseline for a good comparison; a tire that's designed for mud. But Wild Countrys are a good tire for a combination rig; I had a set of RVT muds on a CJ once.

Oh, I edited my previous post to clarify it a litte.

Because I'm bored; tires I've run in the past:
Wild Country RVTs, BFG ATs, Goodyear MT/Rs, Firestone crappy-stock-somethings, BFG MTs, Buckshots, 36" Swampers, and 38.5 Swamper SXs.

If you run a lot of dry rock, MT/Rs are great tires.

If you run a lot of wet stuff, buy a buckshot, a bogger, or a swamper.

On the cheap, a toyota with a small lift or mild trimming, no lockers, and a set of skinny 33" $130 P78 buckshot mudders will go damn near anywhere muddy if the driver is liberal with the throttle... I had mine like that for 7 months. The only downside to buckshots is that behave like they were designed sometime in the 1850s - and they sound just like a WWII fighter plane when on pavement at interstate speeds... WaaaaahWahaaaahWaaaah...

You'll NEVER hydroplane on buckshots, though. Ever. They're so frickin' skinny and the tread is too open.

Wow, those are skinny tires! That P78-15 is 8.5" wide at the tread. The wheel on the toy I may buy are 12.5, prolly won't work with that skinny of a tire.
Hmmm, pricing tires now, Boggers look good but kinda $$ (remember, I'm farmer cheap). I suspect that I'll be buying tires soon.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
If a vehicle isn't going to be driven on the road, I think this is the perhaps the cheapest option for all-purpose high mobility tires: [Linked Image]

The pic is kinda silly, but that gives the best view of the tires I could find. The agricultural tires are mounted on 15 inch rims. TIres of that type run about $50 a piece(much less than DOT approved mud tires). Unfortunately, I don't have any means of comparison against dedicated mud tires such as Swampers or BFG's as I have never used them before. Might anyone be able to offer some testimony as to the effectiveness of mud tires vs. agricultural tires?

My '86 4Runner went to the bone-yard November 29, 2004 at 10am after roughly 430,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. :-( Looking for something else to wheel in...

I have MTRs. In some recent 4x4 magazine tests, the MTRs only seem to run about the middle to low end of the pack in the mud. But IMO, they are the best all around off road tire you can buy.

I've driven many thousands of both highway and off road miles with them and they work great. They're very tame on the highway and very, very tough off road. They also work very well in ice and snow as long you sipe them.

I won't buy any other tire for my rig. But the price has gone up significantly since I bought mine, which really sucks.
