I have replaced the Alternators on this vehicle four times in the past four years. The Auto Service that works on my vehicle each time has put in a Bosch Alternators. Any ideal why? The History on the Alternators for this vehicle is:
1. 12-10-2001 Alternator & Battery was replaced.
2. 1-30-2003 Alternator & three belts was replaced.
3. 11-18-2003 Alternator & EFI Temp. Sensor was replaced.
4. 6-24-04 Alternator is in for replacement.
Each time, an electronics check was run and they check out fine. Any suggestions on what could be causing these burnouts? Thanks!

Sounds like the CS130 (late model GM) syndrome high amps small case the manufactures use a mini sized case/cooling system to fit in small spaces and then up the amp. output to run all the gadgets that people want. You may want to cough up the dough for a brand new unit. I believe the new unit will have to be purchased from a Mitsu dealer and may cost an arm and a leg and half the remaining arm. I hope this helps.Mike

I replaced mine two years ago after the convertor in my trailer lights harness went bad and fried the alternator. I put in a new unit from the dealer and have had no problems since. It was $245 though.

Speaking of alternators, Anyone know of a good, stronger aftermarket alternator?

later, Angelo If you have the space and don,t need more than 100 amps and can mess with mounting the Delco 100 amp single wire is hard to beat but i've never installed one on a Mitsu before the case is about a third bigger so it may be a pain IMO Mike

I am running a mits alternator from a 3000 gt, its a 110 am unit, pretty compact and seems very reliable.
If I lost that many alternators I would look at the vehicles electrics. If you have a loose connection esp to the battery you can hurt the alternator.
When the alternator is putting out a lot of current and the load is suddenly (even for a brief amount of time) removed it cannot respond fast enough.
The regulator will drop down in its current to the field windings, but the magnetic field does not collapse instantly. So with out a load and a field winding at full tilt the output voltage rises very quickly.
There are Zener diodes in the alternator to take this load dump and shunt it to ground. However they cannot do it all the time and they will eventually fail.
Once you lose the protection diode the rectifing diode gets a nasty voltage spike and stops working.
Eventually you alternator is toast.
Also many rebuilds are not all that good.
If you can find out why the alternators died it can help a lot. It never hurts to check the connectors for high resistance.

How many amps does a Montero alternator have. I have run all my lights at one time at one point in time. Maybe I shouldnt have done that cause it was a total of 7 lights and a winch running. But it wasnt for a long time. tell me more about this Delco alternator..... I am running a mits alternator from a 3000 gt, its a 110 am unit, pretty compact and seems very reliable I've read about this a few times on the forum. are the they same size as your factory alternator and fit like a glove? later guys, Angelo

Kevin's is on a Gen I and he had to cut a pulley for it. Don't know how it would fit your 99. He might...

If your '95 has a 3.0L check that the front cam seal on the right side isn't leaking. The cam seal will leak then run down the side of the head and drips directly on your alternator slowly killing it over time.

Oil leaking from the passenger side valve cover gasket causes the same thing.
