 need help...v6 third in a 4 cylinder housing

Getting the Wheeling Fever

I have a 85 4runner with a 4 cylinder third that is bad. I purchased a v6 third with precsion gears and an ARB. Everything I've read say the 4cylinder and v6 thirds are interchangeable. I took out the 4 cylinder third and trying to install the v6 third and I can't get it to fit. Do I need to modify the housing? Thanks in advance for the help

so it sounds like the ring gear teeth are catching on the housing? What ratio is in it?

What is not fitting? I run a 4.88 geared V6 3rd in my '85 housing. Usually you may need to grind a bit off the two notches in the housing to let the ring gear teeth fit past, I had to do that with the 5.29/4cyl 3rd I used to run. I also find that opening up the mounting holes in the 3rd a tad helps a great deal. I use a bit that is 1/64" to 1/32" larger than the existing holes to make it easier to slip the 3rd member in place over the studs. Makes it so much easier when you are laying on your back trying to wrestle the thing into place.

It feels like the ring gear is hitting the housing. It's 5.29 gears. I'll try grinding the housing.

5.29s seen to be the hardest to install, the tips of the ring gear teeth stick out farther. Either grind the notches in the housing a little deeper (there are two pieces of steel there, often the two don't line up perfectly and there is a little step - grind that flat) or try rocking the pinion flange back and forth as you work the 3rd into place, that's often all it takes to get the gears to fit into place.

I have a V6 third with 4:88's on my 4 cylinder housing.It went in like it didn't want to fit .So I kept trying to find the right angle and it went right in.The axles will fit perfect once your V6 third are in.
