Simply put, wheel base!

yeah, I felt so bad when I saw a Suburban making
those stairs effortlessly...

Your not the only one, I have done tons of trails with no problems, but forget the stairs it just makes me look like a suck driver.

Scott, did you make that huge sand hill ("truck hill")
at the far side of the area ? I found that hill only
by the end of the day, my fellow passenger was already tired
and scared, so I did not try to make the hill.
Is it really difficult, did you go thru it ?

Regards,
Oleg

Oleg,
It's good to see our 2nd gen Rodeos can be put through their paces and still come out alive, whether successful or not.... I think you did us good!

OK, this thread is back. Let's continue the discussion about wheel base, tire pressure and tire type.

Also, does anybody have any pictures of this obstacle?

Michael

I'll re-ask: Why does the Rodeo get stuck? Is it wheelbase? Is it hiting front and rear tires at the sime time, then having to pull the weight of the vehicle up with only the edge of traction on all 4 wheels?

Subrubans were mentioned doing it without much problem--I picture high-centering with a longer wheel base. Wouldn't a Jeep/Samuri (short wheelbase) have the best run at it, getting on one stair at a time?

[color:"white"]? 04 Rodeo DI ?[/color] 75k mi, body damage on the 1st weekend I got it.

no, it did not. The surfice was fairly firm - it
was PAVED, and it was steep uphill.
You cannot get stuck under these conditions

yep! I had not enough traction to pull me up.

That Suburban on 35" (or may be even 38") had plenty
of clearence over the steps. I do not know about
Jeeps/Sammies - they would have to climb steeper
angle than Suburban. I saw a short wheelbase vehicle
making those steps, but it was a buggy with something
like 40" wheels.

But if a member of this board did it on his 29"s, than
it must be not so difficult for an experienced driver...

I did not air down. I had no air pump with me to
air it back. My tires have 35 psi. May be, this makes big
difference.

That's it right there...huge difference in traction when aired down. That's why everybody goes through the PITA of airing down, it's worth it if traction is marginal.

Simply put, holeg agreed that he just needs to air down. I air my MTs to 10psi and climb like a goat on those steps with 29''ers!

I'll re-hit something sent earlier. I'd love to see a picture, if someone has one, so I can better understand.

My fellow made some pictures, I'll ask him to send
them to me and I'll find out if there are pictures
of the stairs.

a large staircase of logs and rocks. It was surprisingly steeper and more difficult than it looks
