The starter on Linda's truck has been having sporadic problems lately, and I think that it's finally crapped out.

What it's doing is when you try and start the engine, EVERYTHING just DIES...no power, the clock gets reset, the radio loses its presets. When it DOES crank over, it cranks fine. I'm assuming that something is shorting out hard, but I'm not sure which it is, the starter motor itself, or the solenoid.

Clearly, I'd like to not have to pay for the whole starter if I don't have to...anybody have any thoughts before I cough up cash?

Might be a loose connection to the battery. If you had a totally shorted starter the solenoid should chatter as it disengages from the voltage drop of the short. Total silence sounds like a power loss to all systems when you go to draw a large amount of current.

I'm with Kevin. I bet if you clean ALL the terminals at the battery, you'll solve the problem. Make sure you get the ones to the fusible links. The only place the two main current paths you mentioned (starter primary circuit and other wiring harness) is at the battery terminal/post interface, where the fusible links make the branch off to the other circuits. Also check the - terminal connection.

Well, crap...I feel pretty foolish.

Turns out the negative battery clamp (the thin brass one) was pretty crusty inside with hard, corroded oxide (heh, rhymed)...I just went out and cleaned them both (the positive just needed a little brushing), and now it fires right up.

I've just never seen crusty terminals cause this sort of behavior...it's always looked like a dying battery, with dimming lights and stuff, but not a hard kill of everything electrical.

Harrumph.
