You can find a MileMarker E9000 for $449 at e-winches. They also have the 12,000 lb. model for $619 (it's the same model you found for less--I didn't see the 9000 lb model for less, but I didn't have a lot of time to search). The 12k is the one I have on my wish list. Considering the differences in design (wound versus permanent motor, first and foremost), you get more than just 33% more pull for your the extra 20% in price... Still far below the Warn asking prices, though.

There's no reason for a winch to pull over 500 amps at load. That's an indicator of poor design (or severe cost and reliability sacrifices) and likely early failure. At peak pulling capacity, the 12,000 lb. MileMarker tops out around 400 amps. The 9000 at about 300 amps, and yes, even that will definitely do your battery in after heavy use. It's easy to see why a lot of guys use a marine deep cycle as their secondary battery, but you still have to recharge them before you get stuck again. I have a high output alternator that kicks out over 70 amps at idle. It jumps past 110 when cruising. If you plan to winch a lot, you probably should budget for both of those upgrades, as well.
