Huh, looks like a nice mod.
Is that a metal intake tube over the engine? I would wrap the intake in exhaust wrap to keep it cool or with something.

Thats good but did you check with the factory if the maf could handle such an increase in airflow. I only ask because i have a 1998 and installed a ram intake and yeah i got way more throtle response and improved gas milage, but that only lasted so long. My maf could not handle such increase and it went bad. So make sure and call your local dealer for specs. [color:"blue"] [/color]

It's not that the maf is overloaded w/ air (the maf mount is the same diameter, cause it's still stock), but the 98's and 99's maf's are prone to failure, on some vehicles the maf can be cleaned and not be replaced. The maf is the only true weak link in our engines. Your maf could have malfunctioned because of the intake, but probally not. It was probally just it's time to go. I am aware of the problems w/ the mafs, but am not too concerned, cause the 2000 models do not have a big a problem w/ the mafs, though they still do malfunction.
And to the notion of wrapping the tubing w/ header wrap, I want the new intake to look stock, hence the stock black paint. And the wrap will only give minimal gains if any.

At one time, wasn't there a super charger made for the 2.7L I-4?

The superchargers are still being porduced to my knowledge, but are ~$500-$1300 more expensive than the SCs for the 3.4L 5VZFEs depending on the model year. The 2.7L SC is $2445. It's all on the site, here: http://www.toyotaworld.com/trdsupercharger.html TRD did a great job of making superchargers that actually have an effect (unlike Nissan's...). A friend of mine has a Taco with a 3.4L, Edelbrock headers, modified cat (i think), and TRD supercharger and his truck was dynoed at 290 HP with 33" tires. Very impressive. Especially since he gets ~17-18 mpg.
