I am in the process of rebuilding my friends 88 22re. I have a Rock engine set. Got lucky after 220K - standard bore, rods and mains. My question is how do the rings go? I have standard Rock piston rings with no instructions and they are split up in bags - 1st, 2nd and oil. There are no marks(like top or a dot) on the rings and no bevels that I can tell of. The only thing that I can see is 92 Rock on one part of the ring and 1.5 std on the other. So does it matter what side of the rings face up or what? I have looked at Hastings site(I know-different manufacturer) and they say if the rings don't have a bevel or an outer groove then the rings can be installed either face up....????? Can I do that? TIA!!!

Find a really flat hard surface.

Stand all eight cast iron rings on edge one at a time. Then hang each off a straight edge thru it's inside.

If they don't want to fall over, and if they hang straight, then they ain't beveled on either side.

In that case install them any way you want.

Make sure to stagger the end gaps as per hastings web instructions and lube them up real good.

Right on! Thanks for the tips. I am going out to check them right now. I have a feeling that I will be installing them any face up. I have looked those suckers over hard and they look square to me. I will post the outcome later. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I found out that the rings can be installed either side up because they are the same on both sides. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/coolg.gif" alt="" /> Now another problem; the gap on #2 compression ring is too small per the FSM. It's gap checks out and falls in-between #1 compression ring specs. I guess I need to grind it down to the FSM specs for #2 ring? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> If it's not one thing, it's another.
