OK, I'm new to the forum and have a question for the experts. I have a '01 4runner with roughly 70000 miles on it and this past weekend something interesting happened. I was driving through town and my check engine light came on along with the "VSC OFF" and "VSC TRAC" lights. Can anyone tell me what is causing this problem or possible fixes for this? I just want to get an idea of what I'm getting into before I take in to get it checked out. Thanks in advance for you help.

Exact same thing just happened to me today. I'll let you all know what it is when I get it back from the dealer.

When my '02 4Rnr was about 3 months old, that happened. Took it to the dealer. Gas cap wasn't tight enough. They reset it.

Good call, Woodsie. The check-valve in my gas cap was bad. Could've been a lot worse. Thanks.

Man, Did you have to pay for all that or was it under pollution control warranty?

Nope, I paid through the nose. Federal warranty is 3/36k. Calif warranty was 5/60k but I am in NY.

Dbryan You might want to check into that coverage a little farther. I found this;
Federal Emission Coverage: Components under the federal emission defect warranty are covered for 3 years/36,000 miles from the date of first use and specified major emission control components are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles from the date of first use. Specified major emission control components under emission performance warranty are also covered for 8 years/80,000 miles from the date of first use. In addition, emission performance warranty is applicable for 2 years/24,000 miles from the date of first use in states and local jurisdictions that require a periodic EPA-approved inspection and maintenance program.

Damn... That is one expensive charcoal-filled plastic box! (yep, that's all it is) Did that labor amount include their 'diagnostic' time as well? I ask 'cause it takes all of 10 minutes to pull & replace (while drinking a beer)... Did you ask for the old parts back? If so, was it cracked?
