I need to replace the valve covers, the old ones are warped. The area under the valve covers are caked with old oil like molasses...last owner did not like oil changes I guess. What is the proper way to clean out this mess? The engine is a 94 chevy crate. Thanks in advance...

only thing ive used for that problem is the Motorflush stuff at your local parts store. just run it for the time is says and it usually cleans some of that old stuff out.

Must have been running Quacker State or Pinheadsoil. I'd put a little atf (1/4pt.) in the oil and run it for about 50 miles, then change oil and filter (use cheap stuff), do the atf in it again, and change to good filter and oil. Watch to be sure the gup doesn't block the oil pump pickup screen - eagle eye on the oil pressure gauge, and don't trust and electrical (stock) gauge to respond fast enough to save the engine if it blocks up.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

when you take the covers off, first use Brakleen on them to get them clean, then see if you can pound the rail flat by lightly tapping it on a workbench or what ever, finally use good thick fel pro cork gaskets, should solve your problems.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I replaced the covers and gaskets then started it up and still had oil leaking...After throwing assorted tools all over the place I discovered that when I disconnected the old oil preasure gauge I had no place but the driveway for the oil to go Well, you live and learn I guess. I will be installing all new gauges this week end and I am sure I can count on new problems Thanks again guys! John
