Wanna see what stock rear speaker pods look like?..... #474278 07/09/04 02:22 PM

A little over a week ago I had some questions regarding the size of the rear speakers. I was told by many folks that the rear stock speaker size is 5.25" which is wrong, they are actually 4" speakers. Anyways, heres the pods they go in. Inside the pods, there is an amp to power the speaker. There are two these back there, one on each side.

Hope this helps someone,
Lyle

PS: I also wanted to add this: I replaced those rear speakers with some Sony Xplod 2-Way 5.25" speakers, I must say the factory 4" speakers blow these away. If I would have known this, I would have never messed w/ those pods (had to cut them to get the new speakers in.) and would have put some new speakers up front (3.5") instead. Learn from your mistakes, learn from your mistakes

PSS: I dont see anyway that a 4" speaker could fit up front, only a 3.5" speaker will fit. But then again, maybe I am wrong.....

Yeah, my '97 LC has a similar set-up in the rear doors. Now, I have to figure out how I can mount aftermarket 3.5" - 5.25" speakers using the existing mounting pod.

Someone might make adapters to mount aftermarket speakers or maybe I can fabricate something to mount them.

that amp also powers the power intenna I beleive.
I broke the power intenna off wheeling one night and cut the wire so the intenna would go up or down and the rear speakers went out. Put a basic intenna on and reconnected the wires and the speakers were back on.

Actually, a 4 in. speaker does fit up front in the 2nd gen 4Runners, but you have to make sure you find one that is shallow enough. I have a pair of Infinity 4 in. speakers up there and they fit reasonably well. I did have to heat and pound the enclosure for the driver's side speaker in order to make the speaker sit flush in that casing. Very easy to do, even with a lighter.

Better yet, if you find a shallow 6 in. speaker they WILL fit in the front doors of the 2nd gen. It does require some careful measuring and cutting of the stock door panel, but the results blow away the pitiful 4 in. speakers by themselves. I have a pair of Infinity Kappa's in mine. You also have to relocate the map pockets, but that's an easy task -- shift the back about 10 inches and there are screw holes to mount them at that location. The rear speakers are a total waste -- too far away from the driver to do anything more than provide "filler" sound. Don't waste your money upgrading those unless you're going to do a custom enclosure in those panels and add a couple of small subs (next on my audio project list).

My MR2 turbo also had a similar 'subwoofer' setup behind the drivers seat. I managed to blow that speaker and rather than replace the factory one I bought an 8 inch rockford fosgate sub (not amplified) and box that I wired directly to the wires from the stock sub. This setup worked well in the MR2 and I yanked the box out when i sold the car. I wonder if I can do the same with the 4runner? If those little boxes are amplified, maybe I can unhook one and add a little (better) bass?

I think that you had something completly different going on when your intenna broke.

I took out the speaker pods in the back of my truck and put 6x9's in the back and my intenna works fine.

Body Damage is Cool
Thanks for posting that. I've always wonder what's behind those grills. Have you taken it apart to see what's inside the box?
I wanna see what's inside that box.
