This is the first time I've ever seen a spun carrier bearing on any differnetial, foreign or domestic. The inner race on the ring gear side of the LSD had obviously been spun for awhile. Didn't discover it until I pulled the old bearing off. I was going to set up my spare front center section with the Starion LSD and the 5.29s, but I guess its back to looking for another 88-89 starquest LSD...
Anyone ever seen this problem on a Mitsu unit? I'm guessing that bearing preload was too tight and/or the unit was run with too little or broken down gear lube. I didn't see the ring and pinion to look for a poor setup or anything like that (I received only the LSD itself). Or maybe the guy liked to do lots of burnouts...

That sucks. The story I got from the Quest guy was that the previous owner had gathered a bunch of post-87 stuff to upgrade the 87. My whole collection, besides the car, came with the extra rear end, prop shafts, and tranny, among other things. The gears I pulled for obvious shipping reasons and have been tossed, so can't examine to give any feedback there.
Selling the extra parts was for me to offset my costs and I certainly wouldn't keep your money given if the thing wan't good. How about splitting the shipping though?

Bill, I don't mean to imply that it was your fault at all. I know you got the parts with your car and did not know the history of any of the stuff. That's the chance I took buying parts unseen. I'm really amazed that a carrier bearing spun though. These are press on pieces, and its way easier for the tapered rollers to turn than the pressed on inner race?

No sweat, I didn't take it that way. I'm a man of conscience to the extent that I got the part "for free" with the stuff I really wanted, to me it wouldn't be right to keep the money. (I can't even rememeber, did I cash your check?)

I've not only seen them, but dealt with them. I would mike the casting to see what the bearing O.D. is and compare to a new bearing. Considering its going in the front, I would consider some of the "loc-tite" products made for that purpose. I have used a couple of them with good results. But first, I would magnaflux the bare case/cover. I have posted this before and no one seems to care/understand, but I have 4 of those cases that are cracked at the bearing flange, and the one that I'm running was cryo-genicly treated to stress relieve it. My guess is that you have a cracked case. Kary

starions came with lsd back to 83 when they were imported here. The 88-89 supposedly have a stronger tranny and rear end but only because its a 6bolt setup and not 4 bolt. The lsd stuff should all be the same from any year(not 100% but pretty sure) Ive never seen one spun. It might have been replaced and done wrong, or maybe someone forgot some additive not that it would really do that. The only problem ive had with the lsds is the clutch packs locking up after sitting for awhile. a couple of figure 8s in a parking lot fix that just fine.

My feeling was that if the bearing is spun, that the unit was likely subject to considerable abuse. I guess I could have the case magnafluxed and lock tite the new bearing on there, but I could also take my chances and buy another one with the hope of getting one in better shape.
Kary, which bearing flange is susceptable to the cracking? The case or the cover?

matt Matt, From what I have seenthere are three differant LSD units used in the Starion. The early units had a smaller ring gear and were used till 86. The 87 unit had a larger ring gear and smaller splines like the 86 unit. The 88-89 has the larger splines and the large ring gear. Not sure what the intercooler models had pre 86.. might be the same as regular 86's. Not sure if the cases Kary has that are as far as I know are 87 cases are differant from the 88-89 cases. To the best of my knoledge no one has broken a case from over load so I'm not sure of the signigigance of the magnaflux tests. No we have not forgotten the info about the mag test... just not having a problem yet. I do have a 86 case and a 88 case on my bench. A spun bearing was most likely caused by debris and or bearing failure (bad prelaod as ointed out is possible). I dont think a bearing would spin from a crack in the case at the webbing. To me that is a seperate problem.... It would be interesting to see the it 88-89 case is the same as the 87 case or not. Kevin
