Will the key switch in the tailgate work? If it's just the button on the console that isn't working I would start there and check the obvious. Make sure the switch is still plugged in and clean the contacts. Then get a voltage tester to be sure juice is getting to and through the switch and then to the tailgate.

Just went thru a similar problem with my 85.

Obviously have to check the fuses, and the common things like the window lock switch. If all those check out, then I would pull the switch.

On mine there was a 6 lug connector, and if I touched the connectors with a test light, the window suddenly worked. This could either mean the switch is bad, or you've lost the ground (which was my case). If that doesn't do it, you'll have to check the ECM, which on your truck should be in the driver side rear panel (behind the wheel well).

Feel/listen as someone flips the switch to see if your getting contact (hear the click of the relay). If your not hearing it, then your probably not getting power to the ECM.

If you get the click, but still no movement, try to jumper the hot wire on the motor to see if it is bad.

4crawler has an excellent write up on his site, and some wiring diagrams as well. 4 crawler

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did.
