The importance of diff lockers...

I always thought it was such an expensive accesory, and you never really got to use it. Yesterday, however, it wished I had one, and it became evident to me that it's truly. After attempting an ill-planned rescue of a friend stuck in mud, I ended up like this: Front Side Free!! Both rear right and front left wheels with no traction, and no way of getting out of there alone. With diff lockers, it would had been a ride in the park, since all I needed was traction on the locked wheels. I finally got towed from the back. What are your ideas about diff lockers? Would they have no-doubt gotten me out if this? Are they easily installable in Montero Gen-II? Regards,

There is nothing as a "no-doubt" but they sure help.

What are your ideas about diff lockers? Would they have no-doubt gotten me out if this? Regards, Almost certainly, since both passenger tires seem to be on firm ground. I love my rear locker, but being locked doesn't make your rig invincible. There will still be plenty of ways to stick your rig if you decide to go for the install, but the difference in most situations is pretty strong. Most of the trails I know would be very difficult open diffed. Some sections would probably be impossible, although a highly skilled driver might make the difference. Just remember that the increase in traction a locker will give you is proportional to the aggressiveness of your tires - both wheels turning in muck might not make a huge diff if your tires can't bite. Tires alone would probably have shifted the scales in your favor.

Judging by those photos you would have been able to CRAWL, thats right, no throttle at all out of that, with even just one locker. I would not even bother turning a second locker on for that. Remember, an open diff transfers power to the tire with NO traction! To go from that to 100% traction, is quite an improvement.
1996 SR From the Area 51 Skunk Works. 37"BFG Tires, 5" lift, Rock Track 4:1 Case, Tom Woods Drive Shafts, Oasis Air, Front ARB, lifted gas tank, T-max winch and lots of stuff that cost too much.

How easily did the other vehicle pull you out?
89 2dr 3.0 AT, manual hubs. 33x12.5 MT gen 2 coils,Cranked front tbars Dons rocker protection, Front/Rear Bumpers. ARB rear locker, 2" BL, Beefed up skid plates/trailing arms. Gen II uca, 2 Bouncy seats www.youtube.com/TagGeorge

How easily did the other vehicle pull you out? VERY easily. I was practically out, I just needed a little tug. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" /> I agree then that with a back diff lock I might have been in better shape. Anyways, I realized that all you need is a little brains before anything. After being rescued, I towed my stuck friend from another position and it was so easy. If I had just walked a bit around, checked the terrain... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> How much is an back diff locker anyway? I've seen one, an ARB i think, in $900. I hope there are cheaper ones...

You find one let me know I have wanted one for about 5 years. Combo of money and lack of know how has stopped me. I may not have a wife to get the go ahead from but I still have trouble justifying stuff to my self.

Anyways, I realized that all you need is a little brains before anything. Exactamundo. I've gone places unlocked where people that think with the left foot don't go.
