How do I know it's a T1 or a T2?

Hi, A T1 has quite visible pairs of worm gears that are at 90 degrees to the axle. The T2 has more hidden worm gears that are parallel to the axle. The T1 can be designed for bias ratios from a little over 2:1 up to 5:1. The T2 can be designed for bias ratios from about 1.2:1 up to about 3:1. Here is a link to the Torsen website. Torsen Info

So... what exactly do the different bias ratios do? The higher (numerically) the ratio, the more "locker-like" it is? Or rather, the quicker it kicks in when wheel slippage occurs?

Yes, higher ratios would be more locker like. You wouldn't want more than about 2.5:1 on a front wheel drive car because it would cause too much of the torque to be on the inside wheel in a turn. You can go higher in the front of a 4 wheel drive vehicle since not all of the torque is on the front wheels. For a 4WD vehicle, a T1 would have a slight edge off road where you have off camber situations. The T2 would have a very slight edge in higher speed slippery pavement situations. But both would be very close.

Hello! everybody I'm yuennong from KIA@weekendhobby.com It,s so easy to modify front limited slip by 1. find the second hand rear sportage limited slip (or buy new one) 2. remove only the ABS sensor gear 3. put (install) that rear limited slip into front axle differietial case ... then your sportage are ready to rock-n'roll.

Glad to see you here. Are you saying that the front and rear diffs are the same except for the ring gear? If that is true, I am assuming it is only with the older 26 spline rear axles, not the newer 28 spline rear axles. Thanks for showing up here. Ron

Hi wd8cdh we used every part from rear install to front case except the ABS gear ... there no need in front axle

Hi yuennong,
What year did you convert? Did you use the same ring gear? I thought the rear ring gear in the Sportage was at least 12mm larger in diameter than the front one.
Thanks,
Ron

It's rigth ron ... rear ring gear is larger than front becuase it must cover limited slip body ... but the suit of rear can install in front case axle (my 1996 sportage) I don't know how to post the picture here Thank yuenngong

Hi yuennong,
So it sounds like the carrier, carrier bearings, the center hole in the ring gear and the bolt holes that hold the ring gear on are the same between both the front and the rear.
At least here in the US, the axle splines were the same both front and rear for the first few years that the Sportage was sold here. Sometime before 1999, the rear axles were changed to a larger 28 spline. My Sportage has the 28 spline rear axles.
What year Sportage did you put a rear differental into the front?
