Okay. So what all does one have to buy in order for this to work? I thought the LSD would replace the differential (excluding the ring gear). So, assuming I would have to purchase a new rear differential and rear limited slip, where the heck can I get the differential? Dealership? Would the dealership try to charge an arm and a leg?

Logan,

When it is out take all the measurments you can, down to set-back of circlip groove from the end of shaft, depth of groove, dia of circlip, etc., you get the picture?? Remember the number of splines(absolute confirmation) and the greater(peaks) and lesser(troughs) diameter of the spline. We can never have too much information. Ideally we want to get a full set of drawings that someone could produce a replica from if needed.

Looking at my differential, the vallies of the splines are almost the same diameter as the inner diameter bearing journal. This would make the peaks of the splines on the axle almost the same size as the inner diameter of the bearing journal. When I pull my axle I'll measure the axle shaft diameter and also the peak diameter of the axle splines.

From Kia USA Parts:

'97 Kia Sportage (so '95 and '96, as well.)

GEAR ASSY-DIFFERENTIAL
Options: -LS (w/o Limited Slip Differential)
Part Number: 0K01C 27100A
Price: $558.45
(So with the selectable option being without a limited slip differential, then am I correct in assuming that the default is with a limited slip?)

CARRIER ASSY-DIFF.
Part Number: 0K01A 27150A
Price: $372.35

DIFF.ASSY
Part Number: 0K020 27200
Price: $432.90

Diagram of '95-'97 Differential (large picture, so I decided to link it, rather than making everything here look wierd.)

Which part do we need?

You need item 11 in the lower right which is +LS. But be carefull, I think the web site has the wrong part number for the 26 spline LSD. Last time I checked, they had the part number fot a 28 spline LSD.

By the way, when you select a vehicle on that website, only put in the model and year, otherwise it will not give you any options in the parts list.

Okay, did that and here we are:

From Kia USA Parts:

'97 Kia Sportage (so '95 and '96, as well.)

Gear Assy-differential Rear Differentials
Part Number: 0K01D 27100A
Price: $1,135.45

OUCH!!! Hell - I'll just take a chance and wait for the ARB!!

For all that money and much less effort (finding a rear differential and rear LSD) I could get an ARB. (assuming the whole ARB thing actually happens... Let us pray to the Kia Gods!!)

Hi Morgan,

You will only need:

Item 11 0K048 27200A DIFF.ASSY $767.80 msrp

(again, remember this is probably the wrong part number. The correct part number should be in the dealerships parts book)

You should be able to get it for under $500 from the parts department.

You will re-use the old front ring gear.

You will NOT need:

Item 5 0K01D 27100A GEAR ASSY-DIFFERENTIAL

If you don't want to use a new factory LSD, you have several other possabilities:

1: Eaton LSD for 93 thru 97 Sportage.

2. Miata Torsen LSD 94 or newer.

3. RX& NON-turbo clutch type LSD.

4. RX-7 NON-turbo Viscous type LSD.

5. Probably also KAAZ racing LSD for the Miata $$$$$$

6. Junk yard 97 or older Sportage LSD.

I just talked to Dave Scott. He will try to put his 96 rear LSD into his front housing this weekend.

I thought Eaton supplied the factory LSDs... BTW, it's '95-'97. The Sportage's first year was '95.

You might need new bearings.

The factory LSD is made by Eaton but you might find it cheaper aftermarket rather than from the dealer.

The first production year of the Sportage was 93. It was first imported into the USA in 95.

It is a '97... Think that'd be a good idea?

Parts department? Huh? In a dealership or what?

Wow. That's interesting. I had no idea. (I just thought you were making consistant typos. Or... you were crazy. )
