Looking at my differential, the vallies of the splines are almost the same diameter as the inner diameter bearing journal. This would make the peaks of the splines on the axle almost the same size as the inner diameter of the bearing journal. When I pull my axle I'll measure the axle shaft diameter and also the peak diameter of the axle splines.
