The Pinion bearings are the same both front and rear. We just don't know if the pinion depth and hypoid offset are the same yet.

It only took a new snap ring from the Miata dealer. No grinding etc.

The hardest part was finding the specs for the bearing preload. It's not in the factory service manual. I found it in a Miata service manual and confirmed it with a RX-7 service manual. You preload the bearings so the bearing caps spread to 7.3003" - 7.3031". I set it for 7.3030" and spun the pinion with an electric motor for about 10 minutes and then reset it for 7.3010".

Running 80W-90 GL-5 conventional oil now but will change to 75W-90 GL-5 Redline synthetic in the spring.

Pulls thru the turns in 4WD like a FWD Rally car now.

Very controlable in de-cell too.

No dragging in turns in 2WD even with the manual hubs locked.

I will probably put the factory LSD in the rear next year. (no money now)

How much did the Torsen set you back? An LSD in the front sounds great and if the ARB deal comes through, that'll be a very nice setup.

Yeah... I'm low on the bling, too. I'm getting 31" Super Swampers pretty soon and I need steel for the custom bumpers I hope to be building with a friend's professional MIG welder... ( )... so that pretty much breaks the bank... and I had to buy one of those new Nintendo DS's, so there's another $150... But it's so great!!! [Holy crap... I'm such a nerd... whatever....]

I got the Torsen on ebay for an embarassingly low price. The seller had a miss-spelling in the title so there were few people who were able to search for it.

The going rate is $300 to $700. The snap ring was $4 at the Mazda dealer.

The weather was freezing rain today. The Sportage pulled on the straight almost as good as my AWD van and better than the van in the turns which is a very good thing since the van has new A/T tires and the Sportage tires are almost bald.

Ron,

Do you know what year that came out of? I have called several yards. They tell me the 94 and 95 are the same, 96 and 97 are the same,98+. It may be the difference in the T1 and T2

Hey - which Torsen, the T1 or T2, did we decide was best for offroading? Can't find it using search...
