...not at the usual 14 +/-

for the life of me i cant figger out why the little guy isnt making it up to par.

this is alternator number 3, and im definately sure i didnt buy (another) bum reman one.

i have reset the ecu and checked the connections but it still holds at 11.6 or so, and eventually/obviously slowly kills the truck.

im gearing up for an engine swap in the next month and i am trying to get everything dialed in, also i think this may be an electrical problem rather than an engine one, and i definately dont want it bothering me with the new block..

any input appreciated.

thanks.

It took a friend of mine four tryÆs to get one that worked right from Auto Zone and there ôLifetime Warrantyö Alternators!!! Then it lasted one year, you get what you pay for!!!!

naw i wish that were the problem.

this is why i installed the new one, i think the chances are pretty slim that both alternators (one from advance, one from auto zone) do the same thing at the same rate.

im kind of stumped really.

Did you have the units checked before leaving the store?
I wouldn't be too surprised to see two parts store units
that were bad, even from different vendors. That's why
for electronic parts I go pure original Toyota parts only.
There's a reason why they offer a 'lifetime' warrantee
on their parts at very low prices at the parts stores.
You really do get what you pay for and peace of mind is,
well...priceless.

Does yours have the external regulator? If so did you replace it?

Those years are internal FAIK. Your regulator may be toast in both, its not impossible to have the same failure. Or a diode may be toast, reference above. Or your connections may be compromised, particularly the ground references. Check them all.

If you must buy from non-Toyota, buy NAPA.

Check all of your wires to and from the battery, starter and alternator. They can look good from the outside but be corroded to nothing on the inside.

Are you measuring this voltage at the battery or at the alternator or is the PCM giving you this voltage?

Do you know that you battery is good? Any other possibility of a short?

If you leave the truck sit for a day or two does the battery go dead?

I kind of doubt that you would have two bad alternators myself. Most parts stores can test alternators on the vehicle, have you had them do this?

ill double check my grounds/wires tomorrow.

as i was driving my miserable DD home i realized i didnt fully charge the battery pre install...WHACK!

hopefully this is it.

the alternator isnt running down the battery when it sits, so i doubt its shorting out within. plus its a one year old redtop-so it shouldnt be giving me any guff anyways.

thanks for your help.werd.

Yeah, same deal here. After a couple days battery is dead. Was getting progressivly worst over period of a couple weeks. Tried to boost it last night and fried my jumper cables. The truck sat all winter long. Battery is about 2 years old with little use. Could it have gone bad or was inferior to begin with? I don't want to throw money at it for nothing if problem lies somewhere else. When it did start last night I got reading of about 16 A!
