In about 2 weeks I will be going to look at and buy two 1963 Unimog 404-S. I have read a good bit of info on them and know some things to look for. I understand about how the transmissions run hot and the constant maintenance you have to do on them. The owner is a millionaire ten times over and from what I have been told they are in good shape.

What are some other things yall have heard?

well, they're not very fast
Parts, make sure you get his complete supply of spare parts, if he was running em, he must have a ton of parts
Next, drivers side seat sux. real butt buster.

Well, I've always heard the 'Mogs are indestructable in general but I'm not sure about the earlier mods in particular. I once saw a pic of one with both axles fully articulated; the amount of flex was unreal and not something you'd imagine by just looking at one of these beasts.
I thinke they're extremely cool. Will you be getting one that looks like a cargo or personnel carrier?

On the highway they are allways in the way. 55mph is MAX speed, in the red zone on the tach. Otherwise unstopable beasts. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

We have a lot of them over here but not many of them offroad nowdays.

That wouldnt help too much in Baton Rouge Louisiana.
A 30000lb PTO winch might help....get other people unstuck.

If you're not set on buying from this guy consider http://www.eurotruck-importers.com/ in Flowery Branch, Georgia. I had the excellent opportunity to drive an early Mog and a $$$ mid-80's U-Series (complete with air split 8-speed and air brakes). I also drove a Pinzgauer. All were "on the street" drives and I found the Pinz to be the easiest to drive of the bunch <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> but they are IFS/IRS and not ultra-flexy, they do have f/r diff. locks though and an air-cooled four banger. The 404 was crude at best on the road and not at all comfortable (nor fast as mentioned above). However, it is SUPER cool! I don't think I would want any part of a long distance drive (1000+ miles)in a stock soft top but I suppose you could outfit one with better seats, sound proofing, etc and make a good rig. ok saw some pics at work today. they do not have the 30000 PTO and they are the troop ones. no rust at all. both run and about extra parts i don't know. the tops looked to be in good shape. he also mubbled something about circle steer and a crab steer. ok what in the hell is that? tires look ok. i really don't like the 60 mph, but i don't mind the bad gas mpg.

oh an he said $4000 for both but i am going to try and get them for $3500 or $3000.
