i'd go for a hybrid axle. toy center section, d44 knuckles. you get more ground clearance, a drop out third member and open knuckles.

you can also have them built to use stock d44 shafts, since they'll work in a toyota carrier. the pressure angle on the splines is a bit different but if it really bugs you, you could always have moser or superior build you a new set <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
