If you want to go the resistor route, go down to radio shack and grab a potentiometer and wire it in there. A potentiometer is basically a variable resistor.

GEt it so it blinks the rate you want, take a multi-meter and measure the resistance, and hard wire the appropraite-sized resistor(s) in there.
