One more question on type of oil in 3.2 #485354 08/06/04 09:16 PM

I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, because I've always read all posts regardless of applicability to my rig. But, that doesn't mean I remember all the details. So now that I have a 3.2, I want to get the correct oil into it. AFAIK, I should be using Mobile 1 5W-30 if I don't have the tick, and 0W-30 if I do...is that correct?
A search yielded inconsistent answers. Something about full moons, summer solstices...
Thanks,
Phil

Thats a good place to start. Every engine is different when it comes to the infamous tick and oil consumption. In my case my Rodeo burns a little oil with the Mobil Synths and almost none with Castrol Synths and they both help my vehicle with engine noise. And then there are many people here who swear by the dino oils too. Yup inconsistent. Hope that didnt confuse you more.

A little more searching yielded a little more info., but I saw all sorts of oil weights mentioned (20W-50 and such) and it was just too much voodoo for me to make sense of.
BTW, I'm one of those who swears by synthetic oil (unless it burns/leaks faster than you can check and refill).

I guess I've got it easy, then: I always get the tick without 0w30, so that's all I run.

Otherwise, I run 5w30 in my Trooper's 2.6, if that helps any...

My 95.5 Rodeo also prefers thicker oil to keep the tick away. I just changed my oil this weekend to chevron delo 15w40. It has high detergent levels since it is rated for both diesel and gas engines. The engine is running smooth and quiet so far and with slightly better oil pressure. I also went with the purolater premium plus filter to get the balance btw better flow and pretty good filtering.

i experimented with mobil1 0w-40 in my engine during the last oil change. it's worked out okay so far, but the ticking seemed to return sooner than when i use the 0w-30. i was hoping that the "heavier" weight would increase oil pressure, but i could not appreciate any increase in oil pressure over the 0w-30. it fended off the tick longer than the 5w-30 typically does though. ymmv, hth

I have been using Red Line 10-30 since 30K. I have almost 90K at this time. Ticking rarely occurs and disapears quickly at startup. My oil analysis shows wear numbers in single digit parts per million with an OCI of 7500 mi. I burn about a 1/3 to 1/2 QT every 4K mi.
My engine is however a 3.5L
