Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ive got an 86 22r that just recently started running rough at idle. It kind of sits there and lopes, or sputters. Almost like its missing. Soon as you get on the gas it smooths out fine. The exhaust sounds more like a poooof poooof. If you have any ideas let me know. Ive cleaned the carb, and checked for a vacume leak, but could have easily missed something. Thanks Stinson

How dirty was your carb? You might have your EGR getting a bit plugged if it was carboned up pretty good. Also when's the last time you gave 'er a good tuneup? Might be all you need to do.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
What exactly are the symptoms of a bad aap? I have very different problems with my '85 22r and it was suggested that I replace the aap.

the symptoms of the aap is very rough at cold idle....it will likely clear a bit after the engine warms up. most likely if it is leaking the carb will be very dirty (vacuum lines deteriorating from gas) and the engine will run very rich. alot of black smoke from exhaust. a simple test to check if aap is leaking is apply vacuum ( i did this with my mouth but if you don't like the taste of gasoline do not do it this way) when you apply vacuum ....if the diaphram is not leaking .....no gas will come from the vacuum hose. when you release vacuum a small amount of gas will shoot into the carb from the jet.

good luck
davef

Body Damage is Cool
Bad AAP is kinda a cure-all. There are so many drivability problems that are associated with that diaphram going bad. I've seen very mild idle problems to engines cutting out on the highway. It depends on how big the hole is. A couple very easy checks are:

Remove the vac line connected to it. If it looks/smells of gas, the diaphram is bad. Also, the no1 spark plug will look black and sotty, more so than the others.

Personally, when the AAP goes bad, its better to rebuild the whole carb and change out all the gaskets and the other 2 diaphrams. Plus the neddle seat and readjusting the float... If I only still had somewhere to rebuild carbs...

can somebody please tell me what AAP stands for?
That's not an abbreviation we 'Zu guys use, but it sounds like you're describing an EGR backpressure transducer, or Toyota's equivalent.
Sorry for invading your board, but the title caught my eye as I have been battling a rough idle for some time on my Trooper.
Thanks,
Phil

Say I talked to a guy in GA today, he had a sputter that sounded like a missfire, hesitation then fine with a dab of throttle. Injector hanging up at slow speed was all that was.......*EB
