as agian your information is invalueable, and well respected.

will SOA on stock springs ride as well as a coil sprung suspension?

i am starting a decent project on mine.. and im wondering if coils or SOA is going to be more cost effective and provide good flex. i still have 3 of the 4 stock sprins, and a new free chyrsler 8.25. i do want it very soft i don;t plan on hauling loads or anything. and i do plan on high speed runs in the sand, so 2 inchs of up is unacceptable. from what i understand coils would get me there....

Sunder, I sent you an email with photos of my latest project. If you want to post them it's fine.

As for that link with the tj rear leaf "conversion".
I understand the delema and the need to not miss out on prime wheeling time. So, I can appreciate what he did from that stand point. It also makes doing it the right way easier in the future. All the junk that needs to be stripped of the axle and frame is done, only a couple of mounts and perches are left.
Now, other than that what he did is pure stone knives and bearskins, retro-grading, but without the nostalgia.

The bad habits of lifted tjs are well documented (if Moore was "documenting" it jeeps would be portrayed as responsible for the Kennedy assasination) so what this fellow did could be a god send for some. I just don't think he could engineer a better 4 link in the time he allotted to get it back on the road or he would have.

I can't see going sooooo backwards that I would eliminate the performance of coils and 4/5 link suspension for leafs?

Back to installing a front coil system, I forgot to mention that in all the coil-overed rigs we have done at the shop, all have antirock sway bars, because they have lots of body roll on corners. The stock sway bar won't work.

sunder,
you should get some deaver leafs, bilsteins, and hydraulic bumpstops for the dunes. of course it's not cost effective but you could hang with the long travel crowd airing it out. i'm sure you're not gonna build a s.c.o.r.e. racer but i've seen the bumpstops in action (leaf sprung pro arena trucks up north). when you land, you stick.(not bounce) if you can swing it, they will provide you many comfortable landings. also, if you end up running rear leafs, a traction bar hung from a shackle is very helpful. it cured my wheelhop problem that i would get at the top of a bowl. no more backing down to save the r&p. plus the paddle to sand traction to climb with authority. not making the hill because i had a 70 mph run at it.

Front coils with rear leafs?
I still ask why?

Aren't early bronco's set up this way? coils in the front and leafs in the rear?

Doing these types of conversions on yjs or tjs works better and lasts longer.

I suggest minimum of 64" wide (wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face) axles 66"-68 is best.

Im planning on doing the swap into my YJ. I think the axle I have is about that width..

Spring under? Is there a problem with the ride? Do you think coils are the answer? Flex? Have you explored all the options? Like loosening leaf clamps, shackles too tight, lube between leafs, incorrect shocks/valving?
Reverse shackle?

I've been contemplating going SOA but have some reservations. I'd go SOA in the rear if I do the coils up front. I have the shackle reversal up front now...

The front coil rigs we do at the shop where I work are coil over with the shocks custom valved for the application.
These have less travel and harsher ride due to customers desire to keep good on street handleing.

The conversation can continue...

Thanks for the thoughts Josh....

'wheeling wasn't the same as it is now when the early broncos were built. they didn't even build them for 'wheeling. i don't know why they built them. they're too small to tow, too small for soccer moms and groceries, and too big for 'wheeling. they must have built them for guys too big to fit in a jeep. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
