I read a few of the links. Seems like a lot of debate on the subject. Some guys type more than others, but they all say things and disagree with each other. No good quoted sources. Definitly no proof as to why you should pay $20 for Mobile 1 over $11 for SupraTech, or even just $4.50 for regular oil if you're doing regular driving. (Yet, for the record, I will continue to baby my Rodeo with synthetic)
One guy says he's an independant contractor lubrication specialist...but that's what he put on the board.
I'm not saying he's lying or the information is wrong. I'm just saying that one thing that is traceable is the FTC chasing down Mobile 1 for their original claims, or Slick 50 having to change their advertising after the FTC got done. Same with fuel additives; lots of claims (same company but one cleans injectors, one cleans carbs, one cleans the fuel system, what's the difference besides price?) and only Techron has put up any independant testing to prove it.
Same with our oil debate: Has anyone seen Mobile 1 tested against any other oils to see what (or if) it's better? I'd hate to have Consumers Reports be the only researched source.
[joke] Spongebob would be more of an expert if he was brown, from cleaning up the notorious 4ze1 oil leaks....[/joke]

Some food for thought - take it or leave it. Engine Oil Bible He also talks about oil additives. He sounds like a normal person gathering as much info as possible to make an educated decision. But ya never know ???

He has a good motorcycle site, too. I've continued my search for Wal-Mart Syntehtic Oil. I visited the only Super Wal-Mart in Hot Springs, AR (mixed income service, low to high). They had no store branded synthetic or mixed/blend version. Only regular motor oil.
So far, six wal-marts, only one has synthetic, and that's the one in the expensive part of Dallas. Three had the blended oil. So much for all stores being the same.

I dunnno bout all this synthetic oils blah blah. But I do know as long as my dad has owned cars over his lifetime, he just uses plain 10w-40 any brand, and uses napa filters. He has never had thermal breakdown even when he raced his cars. I dont believe we need anymore than regular oil, if you want better lubricating oil, just get heavier weight.

You cant always just switch to a higher weight oil. You should always use what is recommended. This is what the engineers designed the motor to run on. That weight oil is what supports all your bearings. If its too thick, it wont get in between the bearings and races and will cause damage. The older cars were able to run this heavier oil because the tolerances were not as tight. Dan

Don't want to continue on open wounds, but here is a link that is kind of forumish and interesting. I haven't read it all, but here is one thing that we should have done on the start of this thread is ask someone like Penzoil what oil the Supertech stuff is. The only reason I thought this to be at all relevent, is that some people claim that their was a penzoil/quakerstate seal on the supertech stuff. Thought someone might be interested in the Supertech stuff. Although some say that now days it is from Warren oil. Who knows who really makes it now, still interesting what people think on it. http://boats.gmp.co.nz/messages/192398-4.htmlWell thats all I ever want to say on this subject of oil. Lets get to other topics!
