I know, curiosity killed a cat, but... Can that be that a timing belt will slip when you ford some deep water? (Assuming that you have a snorkel). I mean really deep, at least 35-40". Does somebody has any experience? Is timing chain really necessary to be sure?

But the service manual states that you should avoid water and oil getting on the timing belt... I guess that oil can dissolve the rubber of the belt, but water?

i thought the timing belt was sealed inside the cover? Only from dust. Not from a water dunking.

But the cover is not sealed - it has "gaskets", but I think they are mainly for dust. An improperly tensioned timing belt that almost slips dry might slip if wet, but that's not a problem with a properly tensioned belt. I forded lots of water in a Fiat Spider, halfway up the doors, and never had a problem...

That's what I thought. It is not watertight sealed-just from dust and debris. But probably fasteddy is right, as soon as the belt is tight enough and is inspected regularly-it should be OK.

The cover is sealed to prevent dust from getting in, but when crossing water, the quality of the water will come into play. If you cross a muddy river, you will ingest the silt that is in the water, and it will shorten the life of the belt, as it will act as an abrasive inside the cover. Not a problem if you flush afterwards, but it will depend on what you are crossing. Kary

Big Blue, this certainly makes sense. The problem is that I rarely wash the engine and certainly do not take the belt cover off for that And yes, sometimes water has lots of clay and sand there. Thanks for the input!

One of the things that makes deep water fording possible is the wake created by the truck moving through the water. As long as forward motion is maintained it will form a "trough" around the engine and critical components. Not always practical, but good to keep in mind. A good tip to maximize the benefit of wake is to drape a tarp or something similar over the front of the truck in increase the wake trough. As long as you keep movin' through the water, I wouldn't worry about the timing belt too much.
