Keeping some momentum sounds like a good idea when you just occasionally drive through some small streams.
But that certainly doesn't work when you are stuck in a place like this.

What vehicle do you have?
My 87 Raider had a "sealed" 4 cyl engine and tranny.
It ran with the engine under water (but not the carb.air intake).
