The starter in Linda's truck finally took a dump today...I've confirmed that it is indeed the starter, and I already have a replacement in hand.
First question: Those bolts that hold the starter on are hard as hell to get at. The only tools I have small enough to get on them are also too small to really torque with, and none of my socket extensions are the right length...either too short or too long. Any suggestions?
Second question: The truck is stranded at my shop, and I'm not thrilled about leaving it here overnight. Is there ANY way to bump-start with an automatic transmission? Any way at ALL? I'd really prefer not to have to towstrap it home.

I actually pulled my starter at the campsite the other evening, to clean it out, after a large mud hole followed by a momentary no start key turn. Also pulled another last month after it caught fire (remember that? )
I simply used a 3/8 ratchet, with a 2" extension on it for the bottom one, and sans extension for the top bolt (or was it vice versa?). The cooler lines are somewhat in the way, but with some creativity you can work around em. We ARE talking 3.0l right? I know that the 2.6 starter is an exercise in dieting and double-jointedness...

Actually, AR, now that I think about it, when I tried to remove the bolts at the campsite I had a bit of a hard time, since they had been last installed (tight) by the tranny shop. Ended up using a wrench on the bolts, and used a hammer to tap the end of the wrench until I could loosen it by hand...
As far as jumpstarting an auto... I don't think its possible. That's my biggest fear with the magical slushbox....

40 years ago we could push-start A/Ts if we could get them rolling at 30mph or so (ahhh, the things kids do)..... I don't know if that'll work on today's vehicles or not. Depending on where the vehicle is located, an attempt could be dangerous, though.

Let me know 2439120 Dan Thanks...we went ahead and towstrapped it home last night about midnight after I got tired of fighting with it in the dark. Linda wasn't too happy to be the one towing. Now that I have it home, I can work on it at my leisure...on ramps, so the underside of the vehicle will clear my chick-magnet belly.

Frank I sorta thought about something like that as we were towing it home...I tried putting it in gear when we got up to 30 on F Road, but nothing happened, not even a bit of discernable drag. That's the thing I don't care for about automatics...the lack of direct control over things. They're great for DRIVING, especially offroad, but when something like this happens, you're screwed. I got through high school and my first year of college bumpstarting my old VW...it was 6 years before I ever replaced the starter. I'd have never been able to do with with an auto.

I'll try the 3/8" this weekend, though I may need to go score some short extensions first.

I put together a 65 Dodge Dart rag top about six years ago. It had an automatic. You could push start it, or tow it in neutral. They had a front and rear pump in the trans. The rear pump is what made it possible. I sure do miss that car.
