Got the starter replaced in pretty short order this afternoon. Having a U-joint and a sufficiently-long extension made all the difference...that and daylight.

I had to apply so much torque to the upper bolt that, when it finally did let go, I honestly was afraid that I'd broken something...either the bolt or the tool. Nothing was rusty or corroded, so I don't know what was holding it so tightly.

I know NHMONTY's starter wouldnt work once. I 'tapped' it with a hammer while he tried to start and it started right up and has worked ever since...

your bad at telling stories. Ricky hit it with the hammer while you sat there in the rain. but yes it did stat right up and since ive had no problems.

BUSTED!!! Aren't "wheelers" a lot like fishermen when it comes to "stories"? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Has anyone tried 4WD low and 1st gear for bump starting?
Still no success?
There is something in an auto tranny called a "sprague".
It can be modified for more hold back.
I had a 56 MGA that I bump started by pushing with my left leg outside the door while sitting in the seat.
Oh the good old days. I wish I could buy another for $1000.
Why are the cars I drove as a kid now clasics and worth $$$ but I am not?

Ah jeebus, I had to be reminded about starters <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />

I had to replace mine and the alternator both went 17 years with the factory unit.

Both were pretty easy; just a bunch of stuff to move out of the way(ac unit, front shaft, etc.)

I used about 3ft of extension and an air wrench <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />
