I sorta thought about something like that as we were towing it home...I tried putting it in gear when we got up to 30 on F Road, but nothing happened, not even a bit of discernable drag.

If you only put it in "D", it wouldn't have enough gearing to turn the motor. You'd have to drop it in 2nd, or maybe even 1st to get enough "umph" to turn the engine.... still don't know if it can be done on our trucks - and without damage.

Oh, you'd also have to have the ignition switch on, which I guess you did in order to steer it, but you'd need it in the run position... 40 years ago you could also steer without the key switch on.... heck, 60 years ago they had a starter button.... I used to love those things on '40 Fords and Chevy trucks.... something about pushing that button that really appealed to me... same thing on diesel boats. I guess it's the feeling of power at your fingertips... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

It can't be done on the Mitsu automatic.(jump start) As Dan said you need a "rear pump" and what that is is a hydraulic pump that is driven by the rear driveshaft. Early dodge/chrysler automatics had them, along with Several models of Mercedes and the Porsche 928 automatics. That is all of the automatics that actually came with a rear pump to my experience.

Will it turn the engine if you drop to 1st gear 4WD low?

I had 63 Ply. Valiant 2dr hdt 225 slant6 w/ pushbutton torqueflyte - cranked when dizzy dry at about 35. 67 Dodge Dart GT 2734bbl solid lifter with similar floor shifted box cranked at 28, and you had to start the push with tranny in 1st to get it to work - no shifting out of neutral after rolling. Both dual pump types, as were the GM Hydromatics, and some powerglides (powerflyte in my 55 desoto).

Our's won't do it - no way to spin the sole front pump to get clamping forces in the tranny

If I remember correctly, my '55 Chevy BelAir with PowerGlide would push start in low at 30mph.

I know NHMONTY's starter wouldnt work once. I 'tapped' it with a hammer while he tried to start and it started right up and has worked ever since...

The old BW 35 had a rear pump-
that tranny ended up in everything from old Volvos to Mercedes to an occasional Brit car...
