Title says it all. Looking for a set of four tires to replace the
OEM Michelin Cross Terrains on the Sorento. After 34k, it is time,
nearing the wear bars and tread is highly non existant.

So here is the deal, Cross Terrains, while not a BAD tire, will not
be mounted on the vehicle again. Too soft of a compound, tread, and
sidewall. That would explain the good traction we experienced in
virtually all conditions, rain, snow, ice, dry, sand, etc. Not to
mention these tires are more than my MT/Rs on the Amigo!!!

So the needs:
Stiffer sidewall (reduced tire induced body roll)
Slightly larger (OEM P245/70R16. Plus 0 is a P245/75R16)
Slightly harder compound (want 45k+ out of them)
Budget friendly (~$4-500)
Possible to hit minor trails, sub 6 rated (AT slanted type)

Here are a few choices that I have found that might work out, I am
open to suggestions, opinions, experience that you may have with
them or another model.

Pirelli Scorpion A/T
Yokohama Geolander A/T or A/T II+
Dunlop Radial Rover A/T
Toyo Open Country A/T
Bridgestone Dueler A/T or A/T REVO
Pathfinder AT/S
Dayton Timberline A/T

I am sure there are dozens more, but I have checked into these.

Let me know your thoughts. I may just go tire shopping tomorrow
since Tia's allergies are acting up again.

Your stock tires are 29.5 inches tall and 9.6 inches wide. If you went to a 265x75x16 they would 31.6 inches tall and 10.4 inches wide. I'm not sure that size will fit but if it will they should look good on a Sorento. They are only an inch taller and less than an inch wider so they should fit and the Sorento should have plenty of power to turn them. My favorite tire is not on your list and it could be a little more than you want to spend. I like the BFG KO A/T/ I have at least 60,000 miles on mine and they still have good tread. Any of the tires on your list would be a good choice, they all get good reviews for the magizines.

I ended up going to Discount, and have always had good luck with their service, etc.
If you need tires and are local, go see this man... Discount Tires Iliff & Buckley. Talk to Steve aka Rico (CO4x4.org).

So, we went with the Dominator Sport C/T. Basically a rebadged house branded, Cooper Discoverer H/T, Mastercraft HTR. This also has the same basic tread pattern as the Michelin Cross Terrain at a fraction of the price. Out the door @ >$450. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
The Toyo was my first choice but the Dominator was a good choice at this time. I have 30 day trial period, and I can always trade up to the Toyos within that timeframe if we decide to go that route.

I am like the looks of the increased aspect ratio from the 70 to 75 series. Kept the width the same @ 245. It actually normalized my speedo, which was ~3-5% off.

With the snow, I will tell you this. The Sorento (with the TOD system) is by far the BEST snow vehicle I have ever owned. It handled the blizzard of 03 without an issue and was all good up to ~ 18-20", then I decided to ground it and let the Amigo take over extraction duties...

No trouble with tire wear per se. The Cross Terrains wore evenly, just prematurely IMHO @ 33500. I would have expected a 520AB UTQG rated tire to hit it's 65k mile warranty rating, essentially 50% of their rated tread life.
I have had no issues with the Sorento thus far, it has been a good vehicle with a couple minor warranty repairs.

damn, too late, well, for future reference, the BFG a/t-ko is about the best all-terrain tire you can get and it would have only cost you about 50-75 bucks more. they are extremely durable, good compounds, good sidewall, although nothing like a bias-ply, and great wear characteristics along with the best off-road traction available from an all-terrain tread pattern.

Yeah, well in that price range it would be without a doubt the REVO (Bridgestone Dueller A/T).

I am not a fan of BFG, whatsoever. Too many personal bad experiences with them.

We will see how things work out with these tires and taking the old girl off pavement, and I will put on the more aggressive treads.

I looked at the exact same tires you've listed for my Ford Expedition when I got tired of replacing the GoodYear Wrangler RT/S pieces of crap that were on it. Now I have the Pathfinder A/T's on it and they are almost as good as the BFG AT KOs. They come with a 50,000 mile warrantee from discount tire, and the price was much better than anything else.

Someone here has the Pirelli Scorpion A/T's on his Sportage, and likes them.

The Bridgestone Duler A/T REVO was my next choice, but the price was rather high. The Yokohama Geolander A/T II+ was next and then the Toyo Open Country A/T.

I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the Dunlop Radial Rover A/T or Dayton Timberline A/T because the Pathfinder A/T had everything I wanted at a better price.

A tire you didn't list, but should also consider is the BIG O A/T. It also has a 50,000 mile warrantee, but usually gets closer to 75,000 miles. Has a pretty decent tread pattern, and is in the same price range as the Pathfinder A/T's.

Just my $0.02 worth.
