Almost any winch is better than no winch at all. If $$ are an issue, by all means grab the opportunity at hand. I also believe it's how you use the winch. Snatch blocks, straight pulls letting it cool appropriatly all make a difference. I've always used the formula of 1.5 x maximum loaded weight of the vehicle is the MINIMUM pull rating you want. 5000lb truck with 1000 lbs of stuff gives you a minimum of 9000lb winch. I think you'll be fine.
