Landcruisers are famous for having a clunk in the drivetrain (reputed from play in the full-time 4WD components), but I've never heard of it on runners. About the comment on overgreasing the slip joint on the driveshaft...don't pump in too much grease so that it expands in length. This can fill up that void with grease, which eliminates the driveshaft's abiliy to compress/extend, causing premature u-joint failure. At least this is what the LC 80 guys say.

Discs on fronts and drum in rear.

Just a Wild guess but sometimes Drum brakes stick, due to all the brake dust staying inside the drum and caking up. It might be that when you release the brake pedal the truck starts moving and the brake shoes are still sticking to the drum then they jump back. Again this is just a wild guess.

My '97 4Runner does it as well. I regrease the rear driveshaft fitting where it plunges and the clunk goes away for a few thousand miles. Quickie oil change places rarely grease the driveline, so if you don't do your own oil changes, it will probably clunk. I've had an auto trans '90 pickup that did the exact same thing. Grease it every time you change the oil and you will rarely ever have the problem again.

Just changed the oil in the truck and while in the air, greased the driveshaft and u joints. "Clunk" has disappeared so far. Here's my theory: when the truck was previously serviced by Toyota for regular maintenance, they most likely had the truck on a drive on oil change hoist - ramp type. If they lubed the driveshaft while on this hoist, the driveshaft was not fully extended. Having the truck in the air with the suspension hanging down may have allowed grease to enter areas where it didn't go before.

Just a theory, hope the fix lasts 'til next oil change smile

I had the same problem ever since i drove off the dealer's lot. Still have it sometimes. I got used to it. Everything else runs normal... so far.
