For the Vacuum auto hubs (1998 & on)does the Warn manual hub kit come with a new hublock assembly which replaces the original one (step 11 of your installation PDF)? I am assuming that you now have to get out of the car and lock the front hubs by hand, a procedure which was not required on the original vacuum hubs. Can anyone post a picture of what the replaced hub & wheel looks like.
thanks, Hamk Yes, it includes a complete hub assembly. And since you must engage them by hand it begs the question as to what about the plastic hub cap that fit over the original autolockers? Two choices. Choice 1: leave it off. Choice 2: slice off the top of the plastic hub and install it over the manual hub. This allows access to the "lock/unlock" mechanism. This is what I did. Sorry...no pix.

I take that back. I do have a pix. But this was when I had the 95-97 style autolockers. The plastic hub on the 1998 to 2002 style aluminum wheels won't fit over the mech hub. So I sliced the top off and then pried the KIA emblem off the plastic hub and installed it on the autolocker. But you can't do this with the manual hub since you need access to the locking mechanism. So when I installed the manual hubs the KIA emblem was left off. And I understand that the newer Warn autolocker won't fit over the hub cap either.

I hate those, had them on a gen-1 Raider years ago. Well.. backing up is used to disengage them. You need to be rolling to engage them, and to disengage them you have to back up a carlength or 2. The Mechanical auto-lockers.

I hate those, had them on a gen-1 Raider years ago. The Warn 61918 autolockers engage and disengage "on the fly". No need to back up to disengage them and supposedly can be engaged at relatively high speeds...40 or 50 MPH. I know 2 individuals in Canada who have these hubs and they are happy with them. How Warn was able to achieve this mechanically and at those speeds is beyond me. The older mechanicals, that came standard equipment on 95 - 97 Sportages, required a stop or low speed engagement of about 15 MPH or less and required you to back up approx 10 feet to disengage them.

Yes, they are nice, but what's even nicer is that they fail when you least expect it and you are in trouble. I told Dave once I was crazy about them, but after a while and a few unexpected failures, I went with the manuals and my problems have been solved. These manuals never have failed me. True, you have to get off to engage and desingage, but the tranquility in knowing they will work makes up for all the trouble.

I engage the manuals in advance if I even think there is a possability that I might need 4WD like if it is raining. Engaging 4WD in the t-case while moving when it is cold is a lot easier with the hubs already engaged too. My fuel economy penalty with them engaged is less than 1/2 MPG.

Well I wouldn't drive around with them locked any more than necessary because you'll wear out your CV boots faster... I don't look forward to changing those bastards when they eventually break...

I don't think that the turning will make that much differance in CV boot life. After all, FWD vehicles are always turning the boots and they usually only fail due to dryrot or tearing.
