IMHO, unless he is doing burnouts running slicks, or heavy slick swampers, with a locker, he shoudl see a while of life out of that rear axle. The fronts will not like all that power, especaillly 17 splines...

IF, it comes down to it, get a matching set of 44s out of a jeep wagoneer(I believe thats the preferable one)... and upgrade to some 35 spline axles.

Heck, why not go with 60s whiel you are at it....

That LS1 is gonna put some serious torque doqn low, and I know the newer 44 axles have a small "narrow spot" between the splines and the rest of the axle, that acts as a small torsion spot...helping to prevent hard breaks....

Now now guy's lest we furget the carnage that can happen to the D44 at less than 1mph when taking it nice and slow......
Dude I can picture that wicked beast smokin' all 4 with 60's under it locked up front and rear
eehhhhh!! would that net you 4 tickets (or more)
or would it just be a "noice violation" like the old day's?
keep up the work

That is my thought... when I DO break something (cuz you know its just a matter of time)... I was gonna go with a D44 SAS... had my mind on that one for awhile... especially when I was having doubts of the front drop clearing the tranny oil pan! But that worked out and so now I can save up for that disaster!

You have a few valid points in that post... slow and easy isn't always so slow and easy... and yeah, smokin all FOUR would be kinda kewl! lol I was planning on doing that as my first video... but I figure I better first run it and test everything before I go and break something! lol

all i can say is AWESOME!!! a few questions...

1. was the 4l60e one of the stock tranny choices with the LS1? if not, what was involved with getting the computers, etc. to make the swap work?

2. what is the max amount of torque that the TOD case can handle?

3. what were the arguments pro and con with sticking with the TOD vs. going with another xfer case?

thanks, and nice work, taro

Yeah, the 4L60E is the automatic transmission that is coupled to the LS1 in stock form... this makes it an obvious choice as the knew the 4L30E wouldn't bolt up nor would it take the beatin for any time at all. I purchased the motor and transmission as a paired set along with the computer and harness for said motor and transmission. This keeps the computer problems to a minimum... now I just need to go through the pin-outs of the PCM so I can power it up and make it work... wish me luck!

I haven't seen the maximum torque limits of the TOD... honestly, the ORIGINAL idea was that I wanted to retain the fully functional TOD system. Also, I wasn't finding a lot of options for a transfer case with a right hand front drop... now with it nearing completion, I have lost the chances of having a fully functional TOD as I have gutted the wiring from the front of the VX. I plan to just wire up the clutch to a dash mounted swith... so I can engage the 4 wheel locked option... also I think I'm going to set up a throttle position sensor so that when I got WOT, it will automatically lock power to the front... simple solution for what I lost... no, it doesn't make the humdreds of measurements per second like the TOD system... but its a good alternative.

Above are the arguments against my initial change to another T-case. The only option I had found for t-case was the D300... correct right hand front drop and the adaptor to do this was already available from Novak Conversions. The same adaptor was what I am using for my TOD... Eric at Novak Conversions modified their adaptor to work with the TOD... looks like he got the job done.

Anyway... hope that answers the questions. Any more? I'm pretty pumped up... I wish I could go work on it right now. TTYL!

Coach!

You people and your wiring troubles... just drag it to my house and we'll get it running. I'll do it in exchange for some light welding work Everyone has a gift I guess. I own a welder and can cook bacon on the stove, but for some reason I can't get the welder to sound like I'm cooking bacon.

Awesome work guys. To poke a little bit more fun, awesome work Coach (Randii still owes us pics from his dual-sided serpentine belt thread from many moons ago).

Well, honestly, wiring for me is the easy part... between my 14 years on 12v electrical/electronics and my degree in electronics... I have no fear of that part. I think the mechanical part was worse than anything... and honestly, I didn't find that too tuff... just hard to find time to deal with things and once you get a SLIGHTLY discouraging problem, you lose ALL motivation... at least I did. Now that I see that light at the end of the tunnel... game on!

Thanks for the offer... but even if I needed to take you up on it, and I could get it to you... I couldn't produce sizzle-lean sounds either. I have a 90A Mig welder and have gotten pretty decent with that but wouldn't trust MY skillz and that little welder for anything major.

BTW, what double sided serpentine belt are you talking about? Does Randii have a project going on too? If so, I'd like to see what it is.

TTYL!

I'm with ya on that one! Hard to stay in the game for so long on one project, with so many other demands on my time!

NOW you make that offer? Heck, I woulda done it two months ago!

Heh, somehow I doubt that you'd have towed Uzi 3000 miles just for that. Given it's history, I'm fairly sure that it would have fought you every mile too.

There's still time before Uwharrie smile
