It is the new email service offered by Google. It offers a permanent email address that is web-based and can be accessed from any internet computer. 1000 MB of storage, which is a lot more than other free emails (like Yahoo).

It has targeted advertising. They scan your email for key words, and then use that info for banner advertisements.

Its free and I have found it to be a convenient way to receive some of my email. It also has a spam filter.

I don't get anything if you sign-up, but I use mine daily and it works for me.
