I have an 87 runner that is leakin gear oil from the fill nut. my question is, what is the best oil to put back in it, and should I replace the washer/crush washer between the diff and bolt on the fill hole, or just torq the snot out of it. Refill with whatever type of oil you are running, factory oil specs are listed on my page. First, check your breather, make sure its open. If not, pressure ca build inside the axle and force gear oil out past the seal.

You can try tightening the nut down, untake it, torque down to 90 ft.lbs. or so (much higher and you risk affecting the crush sleeve) then re-stake it and see if it helps. Otherwise, the pinion seal is likely worn out and needs replacing.
