If the pads are hard and they can glaze over squeek. Not too much you can do about it unless you want to try to sand the pads down to get the glaze off.

I just replace my front pads because of this (they were worn to about 3/4). I'm experimenting with a soft pad from ARB. quicker stopping time, but don't know how long they'll last.

The clip probably broke off? As far as I know, all pads today use clips. Some older pads were designed to squeal when fully worn down requiring no external clip. But I haven't seen these in a long while.
