I do think that further fragmentation of our community is a real risk from each new node that comes into existence, but if the community grows apace with the multiplication of the nodes, it can stay self-sustaining, without needing to cannibalize existing readerships to populate new nodes. Some nodes won't achieve critical mass and will die... other nodes will thrive and flourish... and I hope this loose network of nodes will intermingle.

Thanks Randii for putting that in clearer terms, you hit my thoughts exactly.

Again, the idea is noble and i do believe many would benefit. The part i get stuck in is the logistics. And unforunately with the internet, sometimes these logistics come as an afterthought to a great idea, and therefor the idea fizzles away and is forgotten.

...I think it rests upon a finding a few reliable volunteers (oxymoron, sometimes!) to generate it and maintain it, and that can be tough. Most of the easily-motivated Isuzu folks are already engaged at 4x4Wire, the Planet, ITOG, etc and etc. Finding staff IMHO would be a challenge.

I run into this a lot in the military. Senior NCO's / Shop Chiefs come up to me and say, "Captain, I have a great idea for us." Yes, they have the idea, and they want me to do all the work. (That's the US part -- welcome to today's progressive military!).

I get a few e-mails every now and then with suggested updated links to my page, part of why I'm behind. Oh, yeah, and that part about me having a life outside Isuzu.

So while the new idea has merit, as a fellow "Isuzu Content Owner" who tries to organize some of the chaos, I'd say Randii hit it on the head. We'd all rather be wheeling than writin'.

That' just one more reason for this:

...but it IS a great idea, Smiley. I'd love to have such a resource, I just primarily question staffing it and promoting it (this would also be handling the political spin issues).

Thanks for covering, Randii <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Anyway, I hope that all parties concerned will be happy to learn that in the last 48-hours, I have decided NOT to 'farm-out' the task at hand, but instead to trudge headlong into the fray of HTML tedium, all by my little lonesome.

The detractors of this being (A) Even a bare-bones version is going to take me quite a while to complete, and (B) that the finished product will probably not load as quickly or look as nice as it would if it were authored by an actual qualified web designer.

IÆm reminded of the words of an old friend, who, after taking a lengthy placement test, remarked: ôWell, I guess after THAT, theyÆre probably gonna put me in the class that has the finger paints.ö --- Hopefully the fruit of my efforts will at least rise above the online presentational equivalent of a Crayola drawing. (We shall see <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> )

If you want someone to help, I'd be up for it.

I remember quite a while back when someone- can't remember if it was myself or someone else- proposed a central database of Isuzu information. One where someone with say a stock 94 trooper could browse through and see the best available hardware addons, or technical solutions, or or or...

What I think you're envisioning is an Isuzu offroading Wiki (google wikipedia and wiki), a central knowledge database and link farm to steer people in the right place.

Also check out www.everything2.com. That system is nice.

No need for special html, javascript, css, php+sql systems- just make it all like this in default no-pretty-crap pages:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/autos/gasoline-faq/part1/section-4.html and also see the parent site.

Not difficult to make, easy on many different browsers/resolutions/systems.

I'm also working on a php CMS that preserves the look and feel of that sort of page and the default cgi listing for non index filed pages (www.muzzleflash.org/amigo is friend's page off the top of my head using such a directory).

Not to be the wet sack, but the other reality is that as soon as you post links, they go out of date.

I had frontpage check all mine......48 hours later.....many bad links. But since some may be down temporarly, I had to check again. Now I rely on people.

We have a guy at work who wrote a great script to check them all automaticly at night, but I'm not a PERL guy.

Links are for landmark websites / business sites.

I really don't see the sort of pages that are unreliably available being linked for this sort of thing.

OK, it may not be quite as neat & clean as I would like, but a little while ago I finished debugging the Clubs/BBS/E-Mail Service section of the links site. û ItÆs good to go, and ready to be button-linked as a page frame.

Until then, I donÆt suppose it would hurt to let everyone preview it as a stand-alone web pageà

^ Remember, I did say that itÆs still a bit rough around the edges (Literally in some cases)

I encourage those who are interested to check my coding thus far... Hey, I'm certainly no expert! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Not bad. See, those are sites that aren't likely to vanish overnight, and are worth linking. It's a good page.

On Sean's site:
http://www.muzzleflash.org/weblinks.php?cat_id=2 That's another overall way to do it, with updateable descriptions and clickthrough counters. You could put brief descriptions in the alt text on your page (shown during mouseover).

There's already alt text on each link, it's just slow to pop-up...
Might have something to do with it being a mapped .gif [* SHRUG *]
