I wonder if the carrier bearings are the same size in both the Suzuki and the Sportage? I suppose that a few phone calls to NAPA or one of the gear and axle companies might answer that question quicker than waiting for ARB to disect your diff. Could we leave that in your hands??? At this point, there seems to be no info as to whether it would be easier for ARB to build a front locker or a pre '94 rear locker, assuming the Suzuki splines will fit. However.....the ring gears are larger, and therefore would need a different hemisphere and possibly different spider/sidegear set (assuming the hemisphere is larger dia -> larger gears, ie, "scaling up"). This may mean new axles would be the easiest/cheapest way to go if we use (for example) an 8" Toyota center in the rear. (27 spline I think) I'll try to make some phone calls about the bearings. I am aware that the rear has larger gears (possably the same as the turbo RX-7 ring gear) but at this point, we don't know if any of ARB's existing products are closer to the Sportage front or the Sportage rear.

just a suggestion, have them look at a locker for a BroncoII Ford 7.8" rear end. it may be different, but it may be a starting point.
another suggestion- custom axleshafts will NOT be cheaper. the only way to make that financially feasible for US would be to also convert to full-floating rear and disc brakes while doing the locker install.
another possibility is to look at lunch-box lockers, minispools and such for Miata/RX-7's now that we have the info on at least one of them.

Hi Gary,
Any luck on finding if they have the tooling for either our 26 x 27mm or 28 x 29mm splines?
The bearings on the Suzuki and the Sportage are not the same, but splines is the important thing. Just about anything else can be machined to fit.

Waiting...waiting...waiting........
I'll give them a call early next week. They did say it would be a couple of weeks untill their engineers can strip it down. I did not get to go looking for a Zook shaft to drop into them (O/time at work), I will try again next week (5 days off, should be plenty of time to get it moving again.)
Did you find out the measurements of the bearings (internal dia, external dia, length, anything else of interest)???
Any more accurate rear 28 spline dimensions ( to decimals of a mm)?? No point going to ARB with "abouts" as dimensions for spline dimensions, as previously discussed.

Hi Gary,
NAPA just gave me different numbers for the Sportage and Sammy and didn't have dimensions.
I think that the best thing that we can do is to give them a front stub axle and a rear stub axle from the Sportage for them to see if they fit into the splines of something that they already make.
I don't have a rear axle (except for the one keeping the rear end of my Sportage from dragging on the ground) to measure.
If one of their products has the same splines (probably Mitsubishi) I will probably have a spare rear diff soon that I could send them.

No, but I do have the rear diff carrier from when I swapped it out for the Eaton LSD.
I know someone asked me before to take some measurments, but I never got around to doing it. Sorry to whom ever requested it! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

One other important measurement to have would be the distance between the ends of the splines within the differential (between the vertical dotted lines in the drawing) Would be a major PITA if we had to have the axles shortened by 1/2" to fit the new differential, or worse, get longer axles by 1/2"......

wd8cdh and Gary,
I'll see what measurements I can get.

whats up guys?
my girlfriend is considering a sportage, so i was browsing your forums. ive been a yota guy for a while now, ive got an 86 4runner.
anyway, someone above talked about a toy 8" center section being 27 spline. this is incorrect. the 8" is 30 spline, the 7.5" IFS and 2wd axle is 27 spline. dana 35's used in jeeps are also 27 spline.
sammy rear ends are 26 spline as stated before, however i dont recall seing the s-10 rear end mentioned. all non-4.3L v6 s10's and s10 blazers had a 26 spline rear end with a 7.25" ring gear. i know lockrights are available for these axles, and maybe detroits.
do kia's have dropout 3rd members like toys or are they like dana axles? if they have dropouts, it may be worth investigating swapping the center section and axle shafts, however once you get that far in, you might as well swap the whole thing.
