Novice in need of some assistance #507209 09/28/04 09:30 PM

Just signed up for this site looking for some help with my suspension on my '97 4x4 4cl Tacoma (75k miles) - this is great!!

My front end has been really loose, especially when I turn. Going over bumps seem dramatically worse than what the bump really is. I jacked up the truck under the lower ball joint (a la Haynes manual) and tried to get some play in the wheel. It seemed to move around the outer tie rod, so I changed both of those. No problems with that swap out, but the looseness remains. Is the next natural progression to replace the ball joints? Is there a write-up (hopefully with pictures) on how to do the ball joints - I've never removed a steering knuckle before, and which one usually goes first, the upper or the lower - am I about due at 75k anyway? Thanks in advance!!

The lower ball joints on a tacoma are simple. They unbolt from the main spindle with 4 bolts from the bottom, then there's a large nut on the ball joint itself that also unbolts from the bottom. Once you crack the large nut loose, take a good heavy ballpeen hammer and give the control arm a solid whack right next to the balljoint bore. (hope this is making sense), this should pop it loose, then do the same for the outter tierod, then the whole thing will come off. I happen to have two of these that came off a brand new truck that I got some parts off of in a salvage yard in San Diego in '99. It had been crushed in some kinda accident in shipping to a dealership. Or at least that's the story I got. If you discover your lower balljoints are worn out and you need to replace them, I'll sell you these two. I'd be surprised to find out that they're worn out though, with that low of mileage on the truck. Someone musta really beat on it off road if that is the case though. Good luck.

P.S. The upper balljoints are pressed into the spindle. They're also fairly simple to remove. Once you disconnect them from the upper control arm, you need to remove the boot and then I believe there's a circlip that needs to come off before you knock it out of the spindle. The last one I did, I think I just supported it in a vise and used an appropriate sized socket for a punch to knock the joint out with. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

I appreciate the quick response. I'm going to be tackling the ball joints this evening and seeing if I can't get those out of there. I thought I was going to have to take off the arm or the knuckle and bring it into the machine shop to get it out - that'll save me a few bucks doing it myself, thanks. I will take you up on that offer for the ball joints if I need to replace them. If they're good, I'm assuming it would be a better deal than the $50 a piece Napa and Autozone wanted for them.

I'm having the hardest time finding the lower ball joints, and you wouldn't believe what people want for them if I was to order them online. You had mentioned that you had a couple that you would be willing to sell. How much did you want for them - they'd fit no prob on my 4 cl '96 taco correct?

Thanks again,
Brian
