Normally I stay over on the Isuzu boards, but I have a quick question on a 94 pickup. Im looking to buy a newer truck, Im having tranny problems on my rodeo, which is pushing this now rather than later. But I stopped at a dealer, and saw a 94 pickup, it has the extended cab, shortbed, manual hubs. Its a 4 cyl 5 sp with 75000 miles. My question is, what would you expect to pay for this. They were asking $9995, which when I heard that almost fell over. I know they hold their value, but 10,000 for a 10 year old truck seems kind of high. It has some minor rust and corrosion on the frame. Mainly just paint flaking off. I did a MBB retail and it said about 7500 for it. I then did a private party and came up with 5500. I still have to take it for a ride. But, it looks to be in good shape, no rust on the body, has a bed liner. What would you guys pay for it. Thanks for your help.

Pull the bedliner up and check the rustification level under it...trapped water has a tough time evaporating when covered over. I wouldnt pay more than high retail for the rig...if the dealer expects more they are obviously higher than a well nevermind. You know damn well they didnt pay more than low trade in for the truck in the first place....dicker them down after a test drive...also make them perform a bumper to bumper maintenance as part of the deal.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll be heading back up tomorrow after I get out of the woods. The trade in value on it is listed at around $3800. Is there anything else I should watchout for besides rust? I know the motors are reliable. But how well does the 4 cyl move these trucks? Im not looking for a speed demon by any means, but dont want to be embarrassed going up mountains. How well do the transmissions hold up? If things work out, I may be switching sides here and joining you guys. The surprising thing is that the tires looked almost brand new. Although I have a set of rims at home that have 31's sitting on that may fit. Thanks again

that's wayyyyy too much. $5,500 would be closer to a good price.
i paid $5,000 for a 94 regular cab 22RE (4 cyl)/W56 (5 speed) in good shape with 84,000 in cleveland (which isn't too terribly far from you) last june. (and it had a fiberglass bed cap that was also in very good shape.) and four nearly brand new ATs. I got it from a private party, though.
i'd shop around some more...especially looking at private parties...if i were you.
good luck.

Thanks again. Id prefer to get it through a dealer just so I might get like a 1000 mile warranty or so. I talked to my dad and he said I might as well trade my truck in.

well, if you do get it...
a big thing to watch out for is the timing chain. the stock guides are made of plastic and the driver's side guide will eventually break. this won't be a disaster if you catch it in time. however, eventually, without the guide in place, the t-chain will wear through the t-chain cover and into a water passage...not good.
if they'll let you pull the valve cover off...or pull it off for you...you can just look down the front of the engine to see if the guides are still there and unbroken. otherwise, start it up...rev it to about 2500RPM and listen for a rattle coming from the front of the engine. that is a tell-tale sign that the t-chain is hitting the t-chain cover.
changing the t-chain is not a big deal...$50 to $100 in parts, depending on whether or not you need a new cover...and 4 to 12 hours in wrenchin' depending on how quick you are.
other than that, they seem pretty rock solid.
i have no issues with power. i have only 30" tires, though. and i have the regular cab which is prolly a bit lighter than the x-tra cab. it's no drag racer, but i can merge onto the highway without problems. i've carried well over 1/2 ton of dirt/gravel/etc. in it at various times up some pretty steep hills without problems, too.
my tranny rattles a bit at certain RPMs, but it shifts fine and seems to be quite strong. no metal flakes in the oil or anything.
it's a great truck...i just think you could prolly get one cheaper.

Yeah do like Stan the man says, put your finger into a couple of holes before shacking up with any of them.
Wont hurt to play with the dealer and at least find out if they are in a position to "discuss" the truck and asking price. If they play hard ball, do a 180, drop trou and show them what you think of their business practices. (Notice he aint driving so this is perfectly good advice and safe too).
Private party will give you the best deal because most people dont have markup and overhead....some need food on the table and others have a new payment that needs taking care of. Shop before you buy....took me over a year to find my 4Runner in the condition I wanted (needing help) for the price I was willing to pay (still too much ).

june of 01 I paid 7500 for my truck with 39k on it.
it was more than I wanted to spend, but the truck was an absolute bone stock VIRGIN!! I could still see the check marks on the gas tank from the factory...
One timing chain and starter later, I couldnt have bought a new truck as reliable..

a big thing to watch out for is the timing chain. Not generally at only 75K miles... more like 120K-150K. They usually let you know audibly before doing much damage.
