I ran a 34x9.5" swamper as a spare in the stock location for a few years w/o problems. It didn't hang down much lower than my Smittybilt bumper.

When I built a new rear bumper I started carring a full size (35x12.5") spare inside, strapped vertically to the roll bar.

Now with 37's, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Last trip I just laid it flat and strapped it down in the cargo area, but it really takes up a lot of space. I may build a rear carrier, but I don't really want to have that big thing hanging off the rear and loose the visibilty...

My 4runner is bobb'd 9" and a 35" 12.50 BFG fit back there snuggly! Now, I'm on 36" IROK's and there was no way I could get it to fit into the back cargo area due to the Bob. So I made a rear tire carrier. Only problem is that I have a Can-Back and no Side windows and it took up all my view. So I didtch that and retrofitted a pickup tailgate in place of the 4runner tailgate which gave me 4+ more inches of cargo area. so now my 36" Spare IROK sits flat in the back. BTW, I't strapped down using the rear seat latch bracket and the old tail gate latch brackets. Now the only problem I have is I can't find a long skinny tool box for my longer tools......

Strange nobody has the spare on the roof?????? I am getting ready for a 3k + mile trip through Mexico and I am taking a second spare that will be on the roof with fuel and water cans.

DO NOT use the factory "D" rings in the cargo area! I'm the one that BIGBRI was talking about. I got beaned by a 32x11.50 traveling at 55 mph. It's the only time in my life I've ever been knocked out. A tire/wheel combo can easily weigh 100lbs, you don't want that flying around the cab!

Can you say more about that? Did the D rings break, or what? I keep stuff ratchet-strapped back there using the D rings, and I'd hate to think I'm driving around with a false sense of security. Thanks.

Make a big fat reinforcing plate for each ring beneath the floor and it should be just fine. Use fatter rings if you want more.

Tires are extremely heavy, hence the risk. That's why I won't run one on the roof; exactly the wrong place to put a lot of weight. For normal cargo I would not worry. Still, strapping to the rollbar is always a good idea.

Hmmm, I'm not sure where Abnormaltoy went... so I'll try to answer. If I remember correctly, on his factory loops, what gave out was the D-ring itself. It is not a complete, welded, loop. Instead, the portion of the ring that you can't see, that goes into the clamp, just has an unwelded seam half way across the back of the D. With enough force the D-ring will open up and pop out of the clamp. I'm pretty sure thats what happened to Abnormal. Those tiedowns aren't as strong as they look.

'zactly right! My "D" rings looked more like this "[". The tie down came right off the end of one ring, held on the other...the journey terminated at my head. Which was made worse by the fact that my seat bent backwards, not reclined, the seat frame folded! Those who knew me before say I'm different now!
