Getting the Wheeling Fever
Need to replace the tired 20r in my '80. I went looking for a rebuildable 22r and ran into an '85 22r- totally complete. The guy wants $700 for it, but the truck only had 13,000 mi when wrecked. My worry is the motor has probably been sitting 6 years. Would you expect the seals to be dried out, valve seats corroded, and internal problems like this from sitting? Stuff I'm expecting
-carb plugged
-belts/ hoses needing to be replaced
-remove valve cover to inspect & replace gasket
-remove oil pan to inspect & replace gasket
If I went for it, I would be removing all emissions equip, carb, & vacum mess to replace w/ header and weber 38.
So what are your opinions on a motor thats been sitting for this long????

So it was driven 16k from 1985 until 1998-ish and has been sitting ever since? How do you know it has 16K? Curious...

It's in my uncles wrecking yard. The truck had 13,000 mi when he pulled the motor/trans. It was a 2wd auto. May have been sitting longer than 6 years, I'm making an assumption there. Either way, it's been sitting a long time. The bummer is, he has quite a few yota's, but he thinks everything he has is gold, and won't sell most of it.

Body Damage is Cool
I would ask to pull the valve cover and take a look, then do a comp. check after turning it over a few times and see what you got. I have a junkyard motor, it runs great! Just as a precaution I changed the timing set, water pump, oil pump, and all the gaskets when I put it in. I hate leaks, and I don't have a single one :-)

I'm not sure how I'd check comp with it out of the truck sitting on a pallet. Leak- down maybe? But I don't have the tools for a leak-down test. What about the price- too high?
I don't think I'm going to get the family discount <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

*Damn...no price break even being your uncle? Talk about getting <img src="http://www.longdog.freeuk.com/smilies4/sex.gif" alt=" - " />

I wouldnt pay $700 for a used engine regardless of mileage. The fact that the truck was wrecked would make me worry as well. Run a motor 60 seconds on its roof with no oil in the pan (all in the valve cover) and the bottom end is gone. Not to mention the topend is compromised. Head on collisions do funny things to crankshafts-inertia sucks when its your rig and something else. Been there done that with a Nissan I had.
For reference I paid $100 for a complete running used 22R out of an 85' 4x4. Sure it had 175,000 miles but since its a used engine...first thing I did was tear it down. Currently prepping for its rebuild. Theres a dude in Vancouver that has a complete 22RE (or had) I was gonna get for $100 as well...just no intake.

I would consider it if you got the DEEP family discount, but $700 goes a long way to an engine with a warranty. Got mine for $1500. Would save you the rebuild too, how much is that worth?

Yeah, running a used motor wasn't my first choice. I actually approached him about a "core". Since I have a 20r, I wanted to get a used 22r long block to rebuild at my leisure. The low mileage had just got me thinking... The thought had crossed my mind of the running upside-down, or head on collision damage as well but I was still on the fence, until now. I have been watching the f.s. section here and on pirate, and saw some comaprable prices for low mileage, or cheap but too far away. I'm just going to keep looking for the core I need.
Oh, yeah, I originally offered him $200 and I think it pissed him off <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />
